The topic that makes strange bed fellows is back in the news. Meaning, the Liberals that want to save the law breakers and the Conservatives that want cheap labor. As compared to the Liberals that want higher wages and the Conservatives that want Law and Order.
At least it looks like they can still check immigration status when a law has been broken, thank heavens !!! Thoughts?

It's important to be precise here. What the court upheld, as I understand it, is a provision that says that the cops must check the citizenship of anyone they arrest or detain if they have a reasonable suspicion that the person might be a foreigner. Let's say you are leaving a hockey game in a car with a tail light out. Since you are a hockey fan, a cop who stops you would reasonably suspect you are a Canadian and would be legally required to check your citizenship. I would advise anyone attending a Wild game in future to always carry their birth certificates with them.

ReplyDeleteI think the Arizona law needs to be replaced with a federal law that gives a path to citizenship for many / most immigrants. I am counting on these workers to help fund my social security payments in full.

I think the Arizona law needs to be replaced with a federal law that is an exact copy of the Arizona law. That is, if you are illegal you cannot work here, or be here, period. Now, compassion and economic good sense tells me we should couple that "opening the window" for self-deportation with (temporarily) opening a "big front door" for those who have been here a long time and committed no other non-incidental crimes.

That's my point. If illegal immigrants ceased to benefit by non-enforcement of the federal laws on border crossing, identity theft and employment, they wouldn't be here. Arizona, as I read the ruling, is still permitted to deny business licenses to employers who do not verify new employees' citizenship. That's the fundamental change needed to federal law, to require verification of citizenship prior to employment.
