No Dental Patient Left Behind
For the anti-NCLB folks, here is an interesting analogy. Compliments of Sue.
Actually, the thought has occurred to me that the medical profession is very resistant to the kind of evaluation system NCLB proposes for schools. That they aren't criticized for it, I think, says a lot about the different ways we view teachers and doctors. It's interesting to me that this dialogue involves a dentist.
I see the piece was written by a school guy. I suppose the way the dentist's attempt to discuss underlying tooth care policy was dismissed as a search for excuses was meant to be ironic. That's something that I find frustrating too, Way too often discussion of underlying policy concerns with respect to difficult problems is characterized as nothing more than a search for excuses. Dental care is lot more than what happens in dentist's just as education involves a lot more than what happens in schools. But the burden of what happens elsewhere, good or bad, falls on dentists and teachers.
