I know you are going to find this amazing... The
MinnPost Moderators are blocking one of my responses again. And have tried to soften it every way I can... So here we go again.
"I find this obsession by the Left regarding race interesting. Personally I think this is all about Capitalism versus Socialism and where the USA should operate in between the 2 extremes. And about law and order. I don't think many people care about race at all.
One group believes strongly in personal property rights. The other believes government should control a large part of "Americas" wealth. One group thinks people need to live with the consequences of their choices, one groups thinks people deserve good food, clothing, healthcare, housing, etc just because they are standing on American soil. And both groups want to care for the truly needy, they just disagree with what that means.
As to the law and order. One group wants to enforce our borders so we know who is living amongst us and to ensure people are not rewarded for budging in line in front of legal process following immigrants. The other group wants to keep the borders soft and reward people who are brave enough to violate them with citizenship.
I think both side will happily accept support from people of every sex, race, nationality, etc. This is a philosophy fight, not a race war. Though the Liberals keep stirring the race pot in hopes to maintain support for their cause." G2A
"Gosh, I can't imagine which side you intend to take. Could it be the one that "believes strongly in personal property rights," that "thinks people need to live with the consequences of their choices," and that "wants to enforce our borders so we know who is living amongst us and to ensure people are not rewarded for budging in line in front of legal process following immigrants?"
It surely could not be the scoundrels who believe "government should control a large part of 'Americas [sic]' wealth," who think that "people deserve good food, clothing, healthcare, housing, etc just because they are standing on American soil," and who want "to keep the borders soft and reward people who are brave enough to violate them with citizenship." No, no judgment or dramatic oversimplification there." RB Holbrook
"I think my simplistic summary makes more sense than Edsall's and the folks who are obsessed with Racism's simplistic summary.
Oh those terrible racist GOP folks... Gimme a break... A Black man is number 2 in the polls. And a guy from Cuba is one of the GOP's top movers and shakers." G2A
"Dr. Carson is a very successful man, and is the exception used to "prove" that racism is dead. He pronounces the correct Republican shibboleths and doesn't bring up race. Therefore, no one accuses him of being a secret Muslim, no one questions his birth, and in what I presume is deference to his very impressive record, no one is demanding to see his college transcripts. He is useful to refute charges of racism (in South Africa, they call it the "Rent-a-Black" phenomenon).
His standing in the Republican polls does not erase the Republican Party's retreat from its historic commitment to racial justice. Let's blow racial dog whistles all over the country--as long as we don't say the "N" word, we're cool. The Voting Rights Act? We don't need that--look at the successful doctor! Racism is dead, and we support this guy to prove it!
"And a guy from Cuba is one of the GOP's top movers and shakers." Do you mean Marco Rubio? He's from Florida, and he is hardly what one would call a "mover and shaker." His movement of late has been kind of shaky, but I don't think that's what you meant.
By the way, you talked about the fellow who is second in the polls. Who is running first in the Republican polls? What is his--or her--stand on racial issues? I have no doubt it's quite enlightened." RB Holbrook
So all I tried to link to were these examples of Black people who supported the GOP.

And to make the point that since we are talking race, it makes no difference where Rubio was born. It matters where his ancestors came from.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that socialism seems to be gaining popularity as people become increasingly disenchanted with capitalism. Where is this all headed?
ReplyDelete--Hiram
I simply think of it as many Democrats becoming more self aware and less self deceptive. They have been trying to pull America to be a social democracy for almost a century.
ReplyDeleteI mean Bernie is at least accepting of who he is and what he wants. Where as in the past other commenters would become frustated if I said the DFL was the same as the DSA.
Maybe it is a throw back to their youth of the "better dead than red" slogans.
ReplyDeleteIs the reason capitalism losing because it failed to provide affordable health care to all Americans? Just a thought.
ReplyDelete--Hiram
Of course Socialism is failing in China, so capitalism has that going for it.

Let's see... Only a portion of Democrats are voting for Bernie. Lets say 40%.
ReplyDeleteLet's say that 50% of American citizens are Democrats or lean Democrat.
That means only ~20% of the population supports Bernie at this time.
Thanks Heavens !!! It looks like a capitalistic leaning mixed economy is still preferred so far.
I think racism is the greater factor affecting the views of many GOP voters (like Trump supporters for instance.)
ReplyDeleteLaurie,
ReplyDeleteI think you are looking for racism and therefore finding it.
Group 1: People who likely don't fit in well in school or at typical businesses.
Less likely to succeed - Black
Less likely to succeed - White
Group 2: People who likely fit in well in school and at typical businesses.
More likely to succeed: Black
More likely to succeed: White
The color of their skin is NOT the issue. It is the lifestyle they choose, their belief system, their attitude, etc.
With this in mind...Are schools and businesses racist if they expect students /workers to:
ReplyDelete- be dressed somewhat professionally and tastefully
- remove excessive earings, nose rings, jewelry, etc
- speak proper English (ie not applicable to recent immigrants)
- treat their Supervisors, Teachers, Peers, etc with dignity and respect
- show effort to perform, learn and succeed
Of course my pragmatic view is that if people choose to live like trailer trash or gang members, then it is likely they will always be on the fringe of normal polite / business society. This has nothing to do with race, it has to do with choices and character.
Bernie, a socialist, is now a leading candidate in America's governing party, something that would have been unthinkable a decade ago. Meanwhile, in the other party, a candidate whose positions on economic issues would certainly be described as socialist if a Democrat was advocating is now the leading candidate for president.
ReplyDeleteIs this the result of a rise of socialism, or a failure of capitalism?

I don't think Trump's views look in anyway socialistic. Maybe a little protectionistic. What am I missing?
ReplyDeleteTrump is far more socialistic than any Democratic wants to be now. He is in favor of single payor health insurance, he wants to raise taxes on the rich, he wants to engage in huge government funded public works projects. All of these things are forms of socialism.
ReplyDelete--Hiram
Please provide a source. Your comments do match the source I just shared.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, it said the only "rich" folks he wants to raise taxes on are the hedge fund guys. Otherwise it looks like he is a flat tax guy like our Jerry.

"I think racism is the greater factor affecting the views of many GOP voters..." -- Laurie
ReplyDeleteLaurie, do you actually KNOW any GOP voters? How do you account for Ben Carson now being #2? How do you account for Clarence Thomas, or Sen. Tim Scott, or Rep. Mia Love?
Racism: the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
ReplyDeleteJerry,
I personally think the Liberals have as much or more racism within their ranks.
Just think of the number of times you have heard that we need more programs, more welfare, different enforcement, different standards, more funding, etc for the non-white people of this country. To me that infers that the Liberals think many minorities are incapable of making it on their own.
And then of course there is the point that they seem to think very poorly of many White people.
I keep thinking what a disservice Obama has been to his (supposedly black) race. This great "affirmative action hire" almost guarantees that another black person cannot be elected President for a LONG time. Not even Ben Carson.
ReplyDeleteAs for the more "quiet" racism, I observe that 90-95% of blacks vote Democrat. You can't say that about whites and Republicans.
