Re-Install Trump? Really?

Who are these crazies?

"29% of Republicans say Trump will be reinstated in 2021.

17% of GOP voters say it's "very likely."

To be clear: there is no way Trump will be restored as president this year."

The local districts approved the results, the states approved the results, the Congress approved the results and the Court approved the results, and these nut cases somehow think anyone is going to let Trump anywhere near the White House? :-O

These kinds of result suggest more about the problems with polling than anything else. My guess is that if you polled Democrats in 2017, a lot of them would say Trump was going to be impeached and replaced by Hillary.

Hiram, I do not believe that is true. Most of us are educated enough to understand basic government. The Trump followers, not so much. These were the same people telling Democrats to “get over it” four years ago but are not taking their own advice.

WLP,
There is a ton of truth in your last sentence!!! :-)

The problem these days is that people don't listen to the specifics of poll questions. They just give tribal answers.

Hiram,
I am not so sure, I am most certain that Jerry thinks Trump won no matter what the facts, data and officials say.

Hopefully he is not so far gone that he thinks Trump will be re-installed as President.

John,
This is off topic but I thought of you when I was introduced to a new organization called takechargemn.com. Their purpose is to help the black community and they seemed to have a similar philosophy as you on how this can be done. It was started by Kendall Quall.

Speaking of liberal hypocrisy, last week there was a report that the multi billionaire owner of the far left Washington Post, himself pays only minimal federal income taxes and in some years pays no tax at all.

Where is the liberal outrage?

Jeff Bezos. The hypocrisy is incredible.

Do you mean this Jeff Bezos?

Where are his companies paying minimum wage?

John said...

Ah... I see now...

"pays only minimal federal income taxes"

I am still thinking that $1,400,000,000 in taxes is a LOT of money...

"As a result, though Bezos' net worth increased by a reported $127 billion between 2006 and 2018, he only reported an income of $6.5 billion for those 12 years, according to ProPublica, resulting in a tax bill of around $1.4 billion."

Not when your wealth increased by 127 billion dollars. That's about a one percent rate of tax. My guess is that the only reason he took so much income is that he is effectively retiring from his business and needs the cash to build rockets. You notice the rate he pays on his income is significantly below the marginal tax rate for someone in his income bracket.

This is something I have been talking about for a long time. The rich pay relatively little in taxes. That's how they became rich. Even for Bezos to pay as much as he did, it required an effort on his part. Had he not sold his Amazon shares, he would have paid taxes only on his salary, which is a minuscule factor in his overall wealth.

"That puts his federal income tax rate at about 21%, but his reported income doesn't account for the massive increase in his net worth tied to stock ownership."

Of course it is less than the highest marginal since I assume he contributes to charity from his personal income.

Now it seems you support a wealth tax, not just an income tax?

What I would assume is that he sold stock. The amount of taxes he paid suggest a capital gains tax bill, and wouldn't leave much room for charity.

I think you need to do some more research. Bezos seems to have warmed up to giving away his wealth in a large way.

"Another cause that got outsize attention from billionaire philanthropists: Climate change. Jeff Bezos topped the list by donating $10 billion to launch the Bezos Earth Fund. Bezos, who last week announced he was stepping down as Amazon CEO to devote more time to philanthropy and other projects, also contributed $100 million to Feeding America, the organization that supplies more than 200 food banks.

No. 2 on the list was Bezos’s ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, who gave $5.7 billion in 2020 by asking community leaders to help identify 512 organizations for seven- and eight-figure gifts, including food banks, human-service organizations, and racial-justice charities."

It seems Jeff and MacKenzie have experienced HUGE changes in their life...

Possibly, but the income tax issues are just the same. Lots of people give money to charity and still pay income taxes.

He/she has paid ~2 billion in taxes and given away more than 10 billion to charities...

How much would be enough to satisfy you?

Time for a wealth tax?

I don't know how we tax wealth. The reason we don't tax wealthy people significntly is that they are hard to tax. Another reason is that we have chosen political gridlock as a governing style. Our government is barely able to keep itself open, let alone deal with policy issues.

Taxing most wealth should be pretty easy, the government knows about our properties.

No system is perfect... But the vast majority of American wealth is "on the books"...

One reason the VAT tax is so popular in Europe is that it is seen as easy to collect. Income taxes are seen as much harder to collect. And even in the United States, in many areas of the country, much of the economy is off the books, with income drastically under reported when it is reported at all.
