Obama's Sharing Their Pain

So what do think of Obama's announcement?

Is it a sincere action based on empathy?

or

Is it another play to the audience?

It depends on what the government does with the saved money. Will it use it to hire a teacher? Even a groundskeeper? Will it be used to pay for a few feet of street saving? Should the president's policy be extrapolated? Should we all ask our employers to pay us less? In an economy which isn't expanding enough, where employers aren't hiring because they don't anticipate an increase in demand for what they have to sell, does it make sense to cut wages so people can buy less?

A little off the question of perceived intent, but still interesting.

Based on the current budget most of his donation will go to social services, healthcare and the military.

I think many in private industry have already taken their 5% cut. Now it may be time for the public employees to do the same.

And though spending is important. If employee cost is lower maybe not so many jobs would go overseas.

Or some more of the jobs will start coming back.

Obama took sincere symbolic action to show solidarity with those affected by sequestration.

The following story from MNPost shows how inadequate this is to the scope of the fiscal challenge the country faces going forward.

Sequestration, deficit, debt? Our real problem is the future ‘fiscal gap’

It was a very interesting article that I enjoyed very much. This statement makes sense to folks like me, but Keysians usually think the government needs to spend more to make things better.

"The gist of these plans is to encourage households and government to save more and consume less"

I agree that "medicare and medicaid" are by far the biggest future problem. That is why Paul Ryan and crew want to go away from a fixed benefit system and go to a fixed contribution system.

However that's where the Liberals keep demanding fixed benefits and no increase in the retirement age. Even though many people could work later due Americans being healthier and living longer.

They want more and more benefits that they did not pay for.

I am going to take some time to look through their proposal.

To really do that,I think he must make a sacrifice with real impact on his life. Fast a couple of days a week. Or give up Netflix.

We will be paying for the benefits we receive. Doctors don't work for free.
