- take top secret documents home after his term
- but to continually lie about it for 1.5+ years
And then they choose to attack the law and order establishment for going in and retrieving the documents he was lying about? What is wrong with the Trump enablers?

I am thinking he should have turned them over when the National Archives first asked politely. :-)
He wanted to keep them. The charges refer to a period after they were the subject of a subpoena, not the earlier time when he received requests to return them. Trump's final days in the White House were a mess, and lots of mistakes were made. No one wanted to prosecute Trump for honest mistakes, or actions on his part that could be reasonably portrayed as honest mistakes.
