2015 State of the Union Address

Sorry for being a poor blogger of late, work and a home improvement project have me overwhelmed.  I am making my garage into a better year round man cave...  However I did make time to listen to The State of the Union Address last week.

It seems that Obama plans to become the new reason for the American government being "non-functional". (ie "The Veto Guy")  It will be interesting to see what he chooses to do when the Congress puts some bitter medicine in with spending bills.  Will he threaten to shutdown the government, or will he sign the bill into law?

And he is busy trying to promise a whole lot of free stuff to some citizens, that other citizens would have to pay for.  At least he is being straight forward regarding his desire to use the government aggressively to rob Peter to give to Paul.

I don't think spending bills are the place for a lot of policy initiatives because that can result in holding the government hostage. But if Republicans want to put a lot of policy proposals in spending bills, I am sure the president has a whole long list of policy changes to propose as well.

My point exactly. Obama would be holding the government hostage by vetoing bills passed by a diverse Congress. It would show clearly that he is the obstacle to a smoothly functioning government.

It will be interesting to see if the Liberals villify him as they did the House of Representatives.

Sure, and that's my point too. When either party puts substantive proposals in appropriations bills, you risk a hostage situation. That's why it's not supposed to be done, why procedures are in place to prevent it. Certainly, if the president demands that spending measures contain the kind of substantive reforms we want, surely he would be properly blamed for an ensuing shutdown.

If shutting down the government is a liberal policy, how come it doesn't happen when liberals are in charge? Was there a government shutdown when Democrats controlled the Minnesota legislature?

Yes, there was.

Please note that government shutdowns rarely occur when one party controls both the legislative and executive branch.

In the case of the last couple of years in MN, it was the tax payers who paid for the DFL's alignment. Huge spending and bonding bills were passed.
