The President is dealing in bad faith on this issue. Remember he brought everyone to the White House a couple of weeks back, and asked for a bipartisan bill. Then, he killed Durbin-Graham. Now, the "Common Sense Caucus" has another bipartisan bill. And guess what:

"In an interview late Wednesday, a senior administration official denounced the bipartisan bill, calling it a “giant amnesty” that did nothing to secure the border, and vowed the White House would strongly lobby against it Thursday.

The official said the White House already has been in contact with individual Republican senators, as well as House leadership, asking that they oppose the bill. Plans were underway to ensure that key Cabinet members also lobby lawmakers, said the official, who said the legislation made a potential deal on “dreamers” — immigrants who have been in the country illegally since they were children — more difficult.

“We’re doing everything in our power” to block the bill, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss White House strategy."

I also remember that he corrected himself 2 days later...

I am not sure if it is "bad faith" or if he is just negotiating really hard for his 4 pillar position.

Sean said...

Publicly committing to one thing then doing another is bad faith.

John said...

I am not sure... I have to assume he meant a bi-partisan agreement that addressed his 4 pillars. Then when they came back addressing only 2 of them there was a problem.

Besides he likely was unaware of details at that point so if he did make an incorrect statement he probably did not know it. He certainly is no "rocket scientist" as we well know.

bad faith

1) n. intentional dishonest act by not fulfilling legal or contractual obligations, misleading another, entering into an agreement without the intention or means to fulfill it, or violating basic standards of honesty in dealing with others. Most states recognize what is called "implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing" which is breached by acts of bad faith, for which a lawsuit may be brought (filed) for the breach (just as one might sue for breach of contract). The question of bad faith may be raised as a defense to a suit on a contract. 2) adj. when there is bad faith then a transaction is called a "bad faith" contract or "bad faith" offer.

He didn't make up his pillars until after the meeting. Stop making excuses for the President of the United States -- who you voted for.

John said...

I think he formulized his promises into the 4 pillars recently, however he has been discussing aspects of the 4 pillars for a long time.

Especially this one...
"Limit legal immigration “We will reform legal immigration to serve the best interests of America and its workers, the forgotten people. Workers. We’re going to take care of our workers.”

He asked for a bipartisan solution. He said he would "take the heat". He said he "wanted a bill with heart".

Now, he's walked away from two bipartisan solutions.

John said...

I hope they can come up with something so popular that they could over ride his VETO... That may teach him a little humility. (not...)

I think he was willing to take the heat for letting millions of young illegals be pardoned.

Not that he was going to take the heat for the endless string of chain migration taking up most of the new immigrant slots.

Again, let's review what actually happened here.

1.) Trump ended the protection for DACA recipients
2.) Trump asked for a bipartisan permanent solution on DACA
3.) Trump has repeatedly said protecting DACA recipients is the right thing to do.
4.) Trump rejected Graham-Durbin, which legalized DACA recipients, ended the visa lottery, and prevented parents of DACA recipients from getting citizenship through their kids.
5.) Trump now demands Democrats give him his entire immigration wish list.

What he is demanding and what he may accept may not be the same... I hope the Senate and House pass something and then we will find out. :-)

"What he is demanding and what he may accept may not be the same."

Here's the thing, though. Ryan and McConnell are only going to want one vote on this issue. They're going to demand to know specifically what the President is going to back and what he won't. They're not going to force their members to take a bunch of uncertain votes that could be used in ads against them in November.

Sean said...

Well, now it appears McConnell is going to allow a bunch of votes in order to fuzz the waters.

John said...

First you want votes...

Now you don't want votes...

What will make you happy !!! :-)

Bipartisan bill gets 54 votes. Who are the ones standing in the way now?

John said...

I do agree that the GOP is being very stubborn, they must think that they can get the DEMs to move closer to Grassley's bill in time.

I find it strange that I am not hearing about qualifications based immigration reform...

"they must think that they can get the DEMs to move closer to Grassley's bill in time."

Good luck. Democrats aren't going to bribe Republicans to do something that they say they want to do.

Maybe ... Maybe not...
