The Correct Answer

From Jerry
"Thus, I must strongly disagree when you say there are multiple "correct" answers to any given problem. There is always one good solution, a consensus solution, but these days the problem-solving gets eliminated in favor of poisonous partisan posturing. I don't remember a specific example recently, but I remember being struck by the realization that this completely commonsense and simple solution, proposed by a Republican, was instantly decried and dismissed by every Democrat within a mile of a microphone, when only a short time previous the same idea, proposed by a Democrat, was widely hailed."
So we agreed that Jerry would propose a problem and a "correct" answer to see if we all could support it.
"Problem, people are breaking the law and crossing over the Southern border, at other than the legal checkpoints.
Solution: Put up some sort of wall to prevent them from doing so."
Thoughts?

Well of course there are lots of solutions to complicated problems. There can be consensus solutions, but that hardly means those are the right solutions, or the best solutions. Very often we have to settle on solutions that are from the best simply because those are the solutions on which enough people agree.

Not all solutions benefit all parties equally. In fact, it's the rare solution that does. The insistence by many that only the perfectly fair solutions are acceptable is why problems don't get solved at all.

Hiram,
What thoughts do you have regarding this particular problem statement and solution?

people will go over or under the wall

Bear in mind, it isn't a crime at all to be in America illegally.

Hiram,
The problem statement and scope does not include people currently in the USA without authorization.

"Problem, people are breaking the law and crossing over the Southern border, at other than the legal checkpoints."

Please try to address the topic.

Laurie,
Do you have a better solution to offer?

I am ok with a wall in some areas ( I think there already is) We could deter illegal immigrants more effectively with e verify. We are not going to get to 0 people entering the country illegally and I am okay with that. A wall along the entire southern border is very expensive, difficult to build in places (and ugly )

Laurie,

Here are my thoughts.

- Beauty is somewhat immaterial since almost no one will see it. The goal is to keep people away from it. And I don't think the livestock or wildlife will mind...

- e verify sounds good however as I often ask. How will we deal with citizens who hire gardeners, maids, field work, nannies, etc for cash? Are you willing to toss home owners in jail?

- right now there are hundreds of thousands of people crossing the border annually. What do you think is an acceptable number?

- also, e verify will not help with human trafficking, smuggling, etc...

They won't mind the look, but they will be adversely affected. But as we've seen, Trump also doesn't care about the environment (because it doesn't benefit him, of course).

Good point however I think they will adapt. Or we will need to leave "doggie doors" in the fence.

As far ago as Vietnam era we had detectors for an "electronic fence" that didn't bother the wildlife one bit. And the object is not to get to zero, but to get down to a number (the most determined and most likely criminal) that can be apprehended by the Border Patrol. Keep the "casual, innocent" border-crossers out.

And illegal immigrants ARE committing a crime:
