Raising social involvement, self awareness and self improvement topics, because our communities are the sum of our personal beliefs, behaviors, action or inaction. Only "we" can improve our family, work place, school, city, country, etc.
When are they going to get their act together and provide a rational platform that challenges the MAGA insanity?

I don't like the Dems that much right now either. They seem to be at a loss on how to oppose Trump. Laurie
Democrats stand for lots of things, too many really. This disadvantage for us is that our message is fragmented, and it often tries to reconcile groups in conflict. The advantage for Republicans is that it gives them a menu of issues to pick to attack which they frame to their advantage. Republicans who stand for very little, offer very little to Democrats to attack.--Hiram
I think of as using blizkrieg or shock an awe tactics. They attack weaknesses hard an quickly and move on creating an image of invulnerability and demoralizing the enemy. We see the weakness of blitzkrieg tactics when we compare what happened in France with what happened in Russia. The problem is blitzkrieg tactics result in extended and vulnerable supply lines, while leaving the enemy more demoralized than actually defeated. If the initial attack can be withstood, if the enemy can find time to reorganize and stabilize the blitzkrieg comes to a halt, and it's tactical problems become central to the conflict. This happened rather quickly in Russia, but it was also the story on the western front, where blitzkrieg tactics were irrelevant to dealing the prospect of invasion from Europe. Is this military and historical analogy relevant to the political situation today? As an analogy skeptic, I am not sure, but I do throw it out.--Hiram
Too often, Republicans are able to frame our positions in extreme ways that are very difficult to defend. I support trans rights, oppose discrimination against the LGBT community, but yes I have a time supporting biological men in women's sports. Republicans have enormous success in bringing marginal issues like that to the center of the debate, and that is frustrating.--Hiram
The transgender issue definitely contributed to Kamala losing. With so many issues its hard to determine what dems should focus on - I recommend tarrifs, ICE secret police, loss of healthcare, militarized cities, the election, Ukraine / Russia, and Israel / Gaza. Thats a lot! What did I forget? Laurie
As long as the DEM fringes support silliness like open borders, defund police, abortion without rules, masculine trans atletes tromping over women in sports, forcing cake makers to make cakes for LGBT events, free stuff for folks, etc it is going to be hard to win over many folks.
I am not sure when the DEMs became obsessed with fringes of America, instead of the 70% of citizens. I assume that is why "bleeding heart liberal" is so appropriate. :-)
About half the country votes for Dems. They are currently unpopular with dem voters because they are so ineffective in their opposition to Trump. The Dems need new leadership. So who will you vote for in the 2026 election? A repub senator that will go along with Trump 100%? Laurie
These are all extreme versions of Democratic positions propagate by Republicans. No, I don't support open borders, but I do support due process and treating all people with respect. No I don't favor defunding police but I don't favor letting police murder people on our streets. I am ok with rules on abortion but not if one of them is making aborion illegal. I certainly support the right of trans women to participate in male sports. And I find impossible to care about the making of cakes. Politicians focus on fringes to the point of obsession in order to discredit otherwise mainstream positions. By the way, I was fascinated how Sydney Sweeney became an issue. I highly recommend her movie "Reality" on HBO Max.--Hiram
At the debates, I wondered why Harris and Walz were treating their opponents so gently. Both refused opportunities to grab a moment. I thought about how Joseph Welch destroyed McCarthy with just a few well chosen words. Why has that never happened with Trump? More generally, the way to respond to blitskreig tactics isn't with caution. We are too cautious with Trump. What I would do with ICE agents and National Guard on the street is simply to arrest them for weapons and other violations.--Hiram
I thought Harris did better in the debates than Walz, but she was not really effective either. My fav dem right now is Sen Chris Murphy, as he is one of the more outspoken about what Trump is doing to the country. About " arrest Ice for weapons and other violations" one writer I follow suggested send in the blue states National guards to arrest those thugs (not a serious proposal). Laurie
As usual lately, I will need to plug my nose and vote for the less bad of 2 bad candidates... :-O :-)
Biden could have slowed the in flow of asylum seekers at anytime... However he chose to wait until it was too late.
Dems could crack down on crime and homeless encampments in the cities , and yet they chose not to.
They could choose to say that they support reasonable abortion laws, but they keep arguing that a 23 week old fetus is not a baby...
They gave MAGA an easy win... The question is will they learn or keep arguing against common sense?
So would you vote for Angie Craig for senate or would you vote for a GOP senate candidate that will support Trump 100% (like then entire GOP senate>?
Somehow Democrats never look good in Republican framing. It's the triumph of the focus groups. We believe in treating people decently, particularly the asylum seekers. We support law enforcement, but are against roughing up black men on the streets, or behind closed doors for that matter. We support finding homes for the homeless, not simply moving them away from public monuments. And we really try to resist the temptation to decide policy based on some manufactured notion of "common sense" developed by political consultants. That's a biggie.--Hiram
Propagandists try to persuade people by framing their message at the extremes. Supporting abortion rights mean you want to allow the murder of five years olds, that sort of thing. I think the problems of this sort of thinking are demonstrated by Trump. It resulted in an election of a reality tv host. while shipping people off to Uganda.--Hiram
You know, I do understand this "horrible things happen because good people didn't do enough to stop them" argument". For me, It's the movie "The Deer Hunter". All of the people in the movie are now voting for Trump, because we sent them to Vietnam and didn't protect them from Reagan when they came back. We didn't find a way to deliver on so many of the promises we made. We were lured by the riches Republicans offered us, and we got rich too, at the expense of ordinary working class Americans. It's right that we are called hypocrites, but what isn't understood is the nature of our hypocrisy, and how through it, we failed America, how it led to Trump.==Hiram
About "Somehow Democrats never look good in Republican framing". so true! They always use extremes to represent dem values, where the real positions on all those cultural issues John mentioned are more nuanced. And the dems are so bad at being outspoken about all the extreme GOP policies and actions. I am still waiting for John to say he could not support a candidate in the current GOP. Laurie
I don't think the examples I chose were that nuanced. If you think they are, maybe that is why the DEMs are struggling?
As for who I will vote for... As usual, I will research my options and decide at that time. Given MAGA offering up only nut cases, I doubt they will get my vote.
John, you said your list of cultural values were held by dem fringes "DEM fringes support silliness like open borders, defund police, abortion without rules, masculine trans atletes tromping over women in sports, forcing cake makers to make cakes for LGBT events, free stuff for folks, " These are not center left dem views (half of the party) . A knowledgeable person would know most of the fringe views will not turn into dem policies. Laurie
Well... Unfortunately the DEMs Far Left crazies hold a lot of power in the DEM party. Just as the Far Right crazies are driving the GOP right now.
I mean look at this huge document of government getting involved in everything. :-O
The center left controls what policies get passed. There are not enough progressives or far left to pass anything extreme. The platform is unimportant. I am guessing, however, that there are parts / most of the big bills passed under Biden that you don't like. I am also guessing you don't like the high level of dem spending recently by the Minnesota legislature. So I will agree, Dems spend more money that what you prefer. Laurie
s:
I think the right largely controls what policies are passed, because it effectively has a veto power. Nothing gets passed without their support. Since there is very little they support, very little gets passed. It's the assymetry between doing something doing nothing. It's hard to do things, even when they are popular. And o nce they are done, because there are disagreements, what is done comes under attack. On the other hand, doing nothing is easy, it is what happens naturally. And it's politically easy to do nothing, because no one is to blame. And really, this is happening today. Because the negative party has veto power, nothing happens, the result being political power shifts to the other branches of government, particularly the executive.--Hiram
Laurie,
This has little to do with what I like or dislike. This has to do with why the DEMs are failing to connect with the normal working class voters. I mean they lost to Trump... That is terrible !!!

Hiram,
Well the GOP just passed the Big Beautiful bill and have populated the government with like minded people. It sure seems to me that they are the party of action at this time. Now the question is if the changes will succeed or if they will be blamed.
An interesting piece.
https://thedispatch.com/article/democrats-policy-not-messaging/
The dem party should focus on economic issues to try to win the votes of normal working class voters. And speak out more effectively against Trump to try to win back the support of their base. If someone asked my opinion in a poll I would say I somewhat disapprove of the dem party currently. Laurie
Biden was faced with a choice on economic issues, the same choice Trump was confronted with. Unemployment or inflation? Both leaders chose to pump money into the economy, putting people back to work at the risk of causing inflation. So we had inflation, and got blamed for it, and we lost the election because we lost the votes of people who had jobs because we saved them. It is frustrating.===Hiram
It will be interesting to see if the Dems can get back issues the majority care about, while reducing their focus on trans athletes, foreign asylum seekers, protecting criminals from the police, etc.
My suggestion is that trans girls should be allowed to participate in boys sports.===Hiram
Support for Trans girl athletes is not popular right now. If it were up to me I would decide case by case. Does it really hurt anybody to let a trans girl join their middle school soccer team to hang out with her friends? If I was a politician I would go along with the majority and just ban trans athletes, as other issues are more important to me. Laurie
If a trans girl wants to participate in boys' sports, and can compete, what's the problem. It's like golf. If a woman is able to compete in what are seen as men's tournaments, she should have that right.--Hiram
Your solution is great for individual sports, Hiram, and is probably the best we can do for team sports as well. Laurie
Food for thought... https://www.cato.org/regulation/fall-2022/transgender-athletes-fair-competition-public-policy#what-is-fair-competition
