Freedom of Speech Under Assault

Please note that Jimmy Kimmel's comments were much tamer than Greg Gutfield's are on a usual night. The difference is that Trump has politicized business mergers and the FCC. It is terrible when government stifles free speech. Conservatives used to believe that.

So both CBS and ABC have caved in to Trump. What about NBC, have they settled any lawsuits or fired anyone to appease Trump? Laurie

Not that I know of. The tonight show is not quite so political...

Though he is threatening again.

Media, as we knew it maybe as recently as a decade ago, is gone, except for the New York Times. Newspapers are vanity purchases for billionaires who claim they don't interfere but do exactly the moment, they see their other interests in jeopardy.--Hiram

Recently, I hav.e seen two interesting shows on the media. The first in time was "Good Night and Good Luck" It was a show about the high regard media was held by others, and admittedly the high regard with which it held itself. It was about a world with only three networks, one of which retained enormous prestige from it's role in covering WW II. Edward R. Murrow was and is, America's most famous journalist and quite possibly our greatest. The show about how he used his prestige and power to overcome the reluctance of CBS, to attack and ultimately defeat a powerful demagogue. None of that resembles anything that would happen today. Today, CBS journalists, are faceless even anonymous. It is many generations distant from having corporate leaders with independent power and stature. And no one watches it anymore.--Hiram

The second show I watched was a movie, "All the President's Men", an oldie, but very definitely a goodie. I watched it, as it happens just a few days before the passing of Robert Redford. It blew me away, of course, as it always does, but one thing I noticed about it is that our world has gone topsy turvy in the half century since it was made. The good guys have become the bad guys, and the bad guys have become the good guys. Today, the prevailing view, the view that wins the election is that Nixon was right. The burglary of the Ellsburg psychiatrist's office which has traditionally been regarded as the origin of Watergate, was the right thing to do. And under current Supreme Court rulings, that burglary was well within the power of the president to order. There would have been no investigation, no fear of investigation, and no Watergate. The bad guys in the movie, from today's perspective, were the reporters, agents of the Washington DC deep state, that Nixon had fought all his life. The news Woodward and Bernstein purveyed was fake. In the 50 years since Watergate, the lessons we learned have been completely reversed. Now, the news we trusted is false, the president is above the law. The theoretical, and slightly paranoid fears of the reporter have have become our reality.

It's a great movie. I recommend it.--Hiram

Though I share many of your concerns, I am not quite as hopeless or cynical.
I am pretty sure a lot of people still watch 60 minutes and other news shows.
Otherwise Trump would not keep suing the companies.

Also, please remember that 55% of Americans disapprove of Trump.

As I keep saying, the path to better times is the DEMs pulling their "better than you" heads out of their butts... Unfortunately they seem resistant to doing so.

What would you like the dems to do? I'd like to see them be more outspoken about how Trump is destroying the country. Laurie

I keep telling you... But I assume you think that the DEMs are on the right track with their policies... So it is likely they will continue to lose.

I hope for the DEMs sake that Trump really screws things up... Otherwise the MAGA will stay in power.

You never say specifically what policies you think they should support.
If there are free and fair elections in 2026 I expect the dems will do quite well. Laurie

Actually I did. Go back and look. :-)

For your convenience:
The challenge is... How will they remove the weapons that they have given the MAGA?
- DEMs unwilling to support common sense abortion restrictions. Their answer always seems to be "woman's choice no matter what)
- DEMs willing to let asylum seekers in without bounds. And then resisting their deportation.
- Not supporting common sense Trans sports / bathroom restrictions.
- Not supporting holding Public Employees accountable for results and cost reductions.

etc...

The common sense approach to abortion is to leave the decisions relating to it is to the people involved. It simply doesn't make "common sense" to involve legislators, lawyers and judges, people whom we would never dream of turning any other important decision in our lives.
- DEMs willing to let asylum seekers in without bounds. And then resisting their deportation.

The common sense solution is to have reasonable asylum programs, and other legal ways of entry. The common sense solution is not to deport people to countries where they have no connection. Concentration camps are common solutions, but we should reject them.
- Not supporting common sense Trans sports / bathroom restrictions.
Sure
- Not supporting holding Public Employees accountable for results and cost reductions.
Common sense requires looking at what cuts mean, not just what they cost. Common sense should require that the cuts fall on the rich, not the poor.

I would be happier with common sense type solutions if they didn't quite so often mean roughing up young black men more, and the military patrolling our streets. Too often in history "common sense solutions" have resulted in death camps.--Hiram

Hiram,
Well we will see how the DEMs do next time? :-O
