MN School Legislative Updates

Here are some useful links to the K-12 discussions that are going on. Most are from Parents United because even though they are somewhat pro-status quo Public School, they do a good job of keeping track of what is happening.

MPR: Dayton Objects

So what do you think?

  • Have the Republicans lost their minds or are they on the right track?

  • Are they doing the right things? If so, your rationale?

  • Or just grabbing money for their constituents?

  • What will Gov Dayton do when these unacceptable bills hit his desk?

  • What does your crystal ball show happening?

Just a reminder, I am a fan of spending more on K-12 education if the Unions and Administrations stop protecting inefficiencies and ineffective personnel. Until then... Let the cuts continue... It must not be too bad if they haven't offered up that poor performing 5% to appease the funding Gods... Thoughts?

I think I'm glad we have Gov Dayton to veto the final bill. I'd also say that given the $5 billion deficit and education costs that account for 40% of state spending, I am happy that there is a slight increase in per pupil funding. I am also okay with a freeze in teachers' salaries for a couple of years.

I have a lot of thoughts about Republicans these days. Among them is that these new Republicans, for better or worse, have no sense of history. They want to change things, but they display no understanding of why things are the way they are. They want to revisit a lot of historical bargains, without an understanding of the inevitable and foreseeable consequences.

Thanks for the interesting link, Hiram.

I have a link of my own, related to Bill Gates, Got Dough? How Billionaires Rule Our Schools. It's a lenghty critique of current education reforms, many of which are in the GOP education bills.

This is the first Bill in a LONG TIME that has real reform and cost-benefit provision to make spending by the State accountable by the receiver of the money!!!!

Reform of the employee-employer relationship (making the playing field more level). Performance based pay and job performance basis for lay-offs. All this is going to be GOOD for the STUDENTS vs the UNION!!!!
