MN Budget Plan <$40 million

Well on the upside it looks like Dayton's budget proposal is lower than it could have been, though higher than the initial plan. (Spend/Budget)  I am interested in seeing how this progresses going forward.  I do agree with Gov. Dayton that both the Liberals and Conservatives will be throwing stones.

Who wants to cast the first stone?

FYI...  It looks like this is an 11% increase.  I need a raise like that!!!

As someone pointed out on Speed's board, people with more children, get more in health care benefits. Want a raise? Have more kids.

~$1,000 per year "healthcare benefit" raise to spend $10,000+ per year to raise the child. It must be "Liberal" math if that makes sense to you.

Well here are some folks that are happy to see our taxes going up. And they have a link to the tax/budget presentation.
Parents United Gov Increases School Funding

I think membership in Parents United should be grounds for declaring them unfit parents. They're either greedy beyond redemption and willing to thieve from their neighbors to discharge their own responsibilities for the kiddos, or they are complete morons for believing that more money will improve education.

I think they are just good Americans lobbying for their beliefs and self interests.

Isn't that the American way?

Just like Conservatives lobby for low taxes and mandated morality.

"beliefs and self interests," eh? I suppose you are correct. Despite their stupidity and immorality, they are entitled to it. I just wish they would quit pretending to the moral high ground and intellectual rigor. Their arguments often sound more like a typical Occupier screed. Just think about it. We're going to spend more on education, when we know for absolute fact that the amount spent is almost meaningless as a predictor of academic achievement, and that Minnesota continues to have one of the largest "gaps" in the country despite constant increases in "compensatory aid," "integration aid," "diversity programs" and mandatory contract settlements that increase costs with NO performance requirements at all. It's lunacy.

Oh, and notice we're increasing school funding but putting off Dayton's "shift" repayment-- the one he demanded, that Republicans voted to repay but he vetoed, then promised to repay, and now...?

I agree that it is a complicated issue and I hope they find a way to not waste this extra funding.

Do you have any concerns about full day kindergarten or pre-school "vouchers" being wasteful? I think they seem like good ideas.

All: Speed posted regarding the topic and I have added some comments.

"Check out slide 9. It doesn't seem to square with the answers. Looks like most of the revenues come from the sale and sin taxes..." G2A

MN Spending History/Forecast Aug2012
"Slide 6 is also interesting. At first I thought, well they only raised it from $36,861 to $37,892, no big deal... Then I remembered that these numbers are in MILLIONS !!!

That means they are spending an additional $515,500,000,000 per year !!! Ouch when it is put that way. And that is when it is compared to the 2014/15 forecast.

It is much worse when compared to the 2012/2013 actual..." G2A

I find slide 3 to be the most telling. What it tells me is that "we," meaning the DFL, have never been able to raise taxes fast enough to keep up with our ever-expanding wish list. Personal income goes up like 2% per year and state spending goes up 8% per year. There's a limit, hopefully, for how long that can be sustained (as it has been for the last 50 years).

I have extensive comments on all-day kindergarten. Later.

I'll give you a better spot to discuss all day kindergarten in today's post.
