Electoral Maps

Things definitely are looking bleak for Donald.  It will be humorous though if he loses worse than McCain did in 2008 and Romney did in 2012. Especially after all the insults he has hurled their way. I mean he is running against a very poor Democratic candidate and still gets whooped...  I wonder if he will be able to be introspective and take personal responsibility for the loss. (if only to himself)

I check fivethirtyeight.org every day; everyday, I wish I hadn't. It fills me with way too much anxiety.

All I can really say at this point is that if Trump and the Republicans control the government, I fear for the future of this country. But if Hillary wins, I fear for the safety of our citizens because the amount of vitriol coming from Trump supporters is truly frightening.

Joel,
Please remember that it was the Liberals who:
- attended Trump rallies to stir the pot
- hired people to disrupt Trump rallies

I think I am more concerned about the BLM / Left Wing crazies than the Right wing crazies.

As for those "terrible Republican policies"... Most of them were in place 50 years ago and the country was doing great. What exactly do you fear?

" attended Trump rallies to stir the pot"

This has happened on both sides, like the effort to have people disrupt Hillary rallies by accusing Bill Clinton of rape.

"- hired people to disrupt Trump rallies"

This accusation is more than a bit overblown.

" Most of them were in place 50 years ago and the country was doing great. "

Really? Did the tax code 50 years ago look like what Republicans want today? How were civil rights for racial minorities, women, and the LGBT community? Did Republicans want to privatize Social Security back then? Was it a common practice not to give hearings, much less votes, to Presidential nominees? Get out of the dreamworld....

Government spent 27% of GDP rather than todays 37%... Meaning that households had more money to spend or save as they wish.

I don't see anyone wanting to go after the civil rights based on sex, race, disability, etc. They seem to want to limit only behavioral civil rights. (ie abortion, LGBT, illegal immigrants, deadbeat citizens and parents) I can see points to the view of both sides.

The current government programs (social security, ssd & medicare) are going to fail to keep their promises. Privatizing them or raising taxes on the wealthy with giving then no additional benefits are both options. The first has higher risks and likely higher returns for participants. (ie invest in different funds) The second makes them a bit more like welfare for old people.

Apparently other parties have played with the size of the court in the past. And I think our rulings would be just as good with 5 Justices as 9 Justices. I mean it seem that only 1 or 2 ever cross political lines.

SCOTUS Size History No real reason to stay at 9...

about "What exactly do you fear?"

Here is Dana Milbanks take on what to expect / fear from a Trump administration;

The first 100 horrific days of a Trump presidency

Let me see:
- deport illegal aliens which will push up wages
- raise the price of Chinese and Mexican goods so that American workers can earn more and companies will need to build plants here
- a reduction in tax payer funded healthcare, so working people can keep more of their income
- cutting off funding to cities that shelter ILLEGAL aliens
- stopping immigration from terrorist prone countries
- Trump using the court to determine if people have lied or violated the law

Now for the big question... Where is Congress going to be during all of this???

Well now I know the tales that Liberals spin to scare their children...

John said...

I think Liberals really have to figure out if they want unskilled / low academic people to be paid more or not... This will only happen if the number of these workers decreases or if foreign product gets more expensive. Trump's plan will do both of these for better or worse...

do you actually believe all the nonsense you type or is it just meant to provoke?

Here is my anti- Trump link for today, this time relating the anti Trump views of hundreds of economists, including 8 nobel prize winners.

I changed the word provoke to be obstinate,(to describe you) but somehow the computer changed it back when I published my comment.

Ironically my Father said much the same thing from the pro Trump perspective...

It is hard to be the rational moderate voice when the two opposing sides are so blinded with anger and fear...

Try a search of endorsements from major newspapers and opinion pieces from columnists from major publications and there will be 10-20 times more people warning of the dangers of supporting Trump than the dangers of supporting Hillary. Off the top of my head I think I have seen 0 columnist essays and a few endorsements for Trump from small newspapers, while Hillary likely has over 100 endorsements when small newspapers included. In fact I may publish a comment about this.

But you just go ahead and keep telling yourself that you are the paragon of common sense and moderation. Your comments tell a different story.

I think that a true middle or moderate view in this election is a person who strongly dislikes both candidates but is firmly in the never Trump camp. I think they would grudgingly vote for Hillary.

I am clearly from the left because I not only despise Trump but I genuinely like and strongly support Hillary. I think it is very admirable how she has strongly withstood attacks for 30 years. She is no Obama, however. It is truly amazing how unable the right wing machine has been to find any type of scandal with which to attack him. The only thing I can think of is the birther nonsense.

Here is a link re endorsements:

Clinton Leads Trump — And Obama And Reagan — In The Newspaper Endorsement Race

time saving paragraph:

"Of the top 100 daily newspapers ranked by 2016 circulation, 55 have endorsed Hillary Clinton.1 Only one, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, has endorsed Donald Trump."

Except that you're only rational and moderate in your own mind.

one more link re endorsements:

Here are all the major newspapers that have endorsed Hillary Clinton for president

according business insider the count is:

Clinton - over 80 endorsements
Trump - 8

John's interpretation of this data: "the candidates are equally bad"

Laurie,
We will find out for sure on Tuesday, but the polls are indicating that the population of the USA is pretty well split regarding who is better or worse.

Which would mean that the person who is unsure how he will vote on Tuesday is by definition in the middle...

Laurie said...

so who could make a better judgement about who is qualified and fit to be president- 80 newspaper editorial boards or an undecided voter who is probably some guy who thinks Obama is a Muslim who was born in Kenya?

A very large percentage of voters decide based on a very low level of accurate information.

Fyi - Hillary is going to win on Tuesday. I predict she will win by 4% and by a wide margin in the electoral college. I also predict you will vote for Trump as you have been impervious to information on how he is completely unfit to be president.

Here is a link that includes a little tidbit about how Trumps staff has taken away his twitter account (yet we are to believe he can be trusted with the nuclear codes)

Laurie,
I think that those Editorial Boards are part of the much vilified "Political Elite" for better or worse. And as such they will err on the side of the "safe bet". This is why us Frogs are being cooked.

Regarding your other beliefs, yes Clinton will likely win and I will likely vote for the Republican candidate because his stated platform is closer to my beliefs than those of Clinton. And on MPR this morning, one of the talking heads said that they believe Hillary will try to go even further Left during her first 2 years to placate people like Warren and Sanders. And to secure her second term.

God I hope the House and Senate stay under GOP control...
