The Trump Trade War

Well people say they want someone to increase wages and costs in the USA, maybe Trump is the answer to their dreams...  Of course the efforts will likely have some terrible unintended consequences...  Thoughts?

Ah yes, trade war. This is the sort of thing that takes me back to junior high school, where the teachers were very confident is assuring students that Smoot Hawley is a bad idea, possibly because the names were funny.

As a Democrat, my party was once the party of protectionism and trade restrictions. These were arguments we made long ago, ones that we lost. The old conventional wisdom was entirely replaced by a new conventional wisdom that went largely unchallenged until this week. Leaving aside the prejudice, there are arguments for trade barriers. I am not going to go into him here, but I will note that trade barriers are one form of picking winners and losers, something Republicans have accused us of, and which they usually speak of in disparaging terms. I guess that changed.

Tariffs are sometimes appropriate and justified. The bigger problem here is that the President seems to have gone off and announced this on an ad-hoc basis without notifying the rest of government that he was doing so.

I think it's also telling what (and who) the EU is targeting with their proposed response: Harley-Davidson and bourbon. A direct shot at Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell.

I agree... Trump is the King of Chaos and Poor Communication.

I was wondering what can he implement without Congress?

I am sure that is why he justified the announcement with "National Defense" preparedness.
