Chicago Teacher Strike

Here is one reason I never want to see Healthcare become socialized.  The Public Union's focus on seniority based compensation and job protection is perfectly opposed to offering excellence for a reasonable cost.  And then to have the nerve to Strike when the students should be in school. (amazing though not surprising)

We have discussed this many times at G2A.  Just search G2A by Union, Tenure, Wisconsin, etc if you want more background.

If Obama is going to try to make Government more effective, I wonder how he intends to deal with the craziness of the Public Employee Unions?

Thoughts?

Remember my simple questions:
Will you personally pay someone you hire twice as much to do the exact same job just because they have been doing it for 20 yrs instead of 3 yrs? (ie same schedule, quality, etc)  This could be your piano teacher, mechanic, newspaper delivery person, landscaper, roofer, etc)  Would you accept being forced to hire your third or 100th choice because they have "seniority"? Even though it would double the dollars you would need to pull from your wallet, to get a job of equal or worse quality?

If not, why do you expect the Government to spend our tax dollars doing it?

I think of it as an "Atlas Shrugged" kind of a deal where important people withdraw their services. Contrast it with Mitt Romney who didn't show up at his Bain Capital job for three years and no one noticed.

The union is being entirely rational here, at least in the short term. If going up against a Scott Walker or Mitch Daniels, you do the best you can but you know you're beaten before you start. But with a Rahm Emanuel or Mark Dayton, it's time to cash in every chit, knowing they're stuck with prior foolish rhetoric that you'll be happy to reprint.

This a really good article or commentary regarding the situation. CNN Teacher's Foe: Austerity

Also, in Atlas Shrugged the individual of value chose to leave society. They did not strike, demand change, picket, blackmail, etc, they just took their skills and left. Society was then free to replace them with other individuals at will. That is how the free market works.

Unlike here where we have set up laws to protect Unions, Striking workers, etc. In essence allowing them to extort money, benefits, etc way above the compensation level the market would offer for the same experience, education, hours, results, etc.

Remember Hiram, next time you hire something done. Make sure you hire the person with the most years experience and pay them twice as much as that person with less experience. That would seem to be living consistent with your stated beliefs.
