Sam at Minnpost asks a good and relevant question here.
As Republicans celebrate their win on the tax bill, Democrats wonder: Is this the GOP’s Obamacare moment?
As Republicans celebrate their win on the tax bill, Democrats wonder: Is this the GOP’s Obamacare moment?
My answer as you know is probably yes. Though only time will tell. The bill sure isn't doing anything good for my family... That is unless it truly does trigger the stock market to rise and wages to increase. If that miracle occurs I may change my opinion. 😀

From the volume of communications I get from Erik Paulsen, I sense there is a lot of worry among Republicans. But that means that they are not taking their advantages for granted. I think a capable and lucky DFLer could give Erik trouble but I don't think it's a winnable seat for us. No one I have seen has anything like Erik's preparations and willingness to work.

As I read your article, it just seems like Democrats are, to quote Rush Limbaugh, "worried sick that somewhere, someone is having a good time." They would be unhappy if their taxes went down, unhappy if somebody else's went down, and probably unhappy if their taxes went up.
I am not a Democrat... And I am still unhappy that my taxes are going up along with the national debt...
I will be happy if companies send of their savings to their employees, however I am not holding my breath.
I would be happiest if the GOP had cut spending and started working down the national debt before the next recession hit. Apparently that was too logical for the politicians.
Agreed ...
"worried sick that somewhere, someone is having a good time."
Especially when we are paying for it.

Have you missed the rash of companies (acting rashly, IMHO) raising wages and handing out bonuses? The hidden incentive in the tax bill to repatriate billions of dollars from overseas and invest in expansion, growth, jobs? How LITTLE year-end trading eroded the stock market, and the fact that the tax bill was partly "paid for" by cuts to spending? I'm normally an optimist, but this is pretty good stuff. You saw the CBS "hit piece" on the tax cuts?
And the "experts" who said that the mandate was the key to Obamacare now saying it doesn't really matter that the mandate is repealed?
Jerry,
Handing out bonuses is normal for many of those companies...
The question is are the bonuses truly larger because of the tax bill?
Will the generosity continue into 2018?
Or are these companies making public relations statements?
Based on our capitalistic system, people are paid roughly based on what they are worth in the market. And what it requires to keep them working for them rather enthusiastically and effectively. Not paid based on the profit level of the company.
For better or worse companies are run by Boards and CEO's who are compensated by raising profits, revenues and share prices... Not by raising compensation without reason...
Unless you think these companies suddenly became socialistic in nature?
I think these companies are cutting their 2017 taxes and setting themselves up for bigger profits in '18, because of the tax cuts. They're also protecting those cuts by making liars out of the Democrats opposed to, and likely planning to eliminate, those cuts if they take the majority in November. It is good finance, good PR and good employee relations. A one-time bonus works even better than a raise in pay, especially at Christmas time.
