Obama Immigration Action

I am busy with the most vexing of seasonal problems, the annual fight to make all of my Christmas light strings actually light.  The most problematic is that beautiful "pre-wired" Christmas tree.  After years of struggling, I am finally removing the strings and starting over.  Which in itself is a challenge because the Chinese folks that put them on were very thorough.

So please feel free to discuss your holiday challenges.  Or you may find this article and the comments worthy of further discussion.  The typical commenters and myself have been having a good time with the topic.  And as usual we went a bit astray.

MinnPost Obama Immigration

By the way, since I was busy visiting family and forgot earlier.  I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving Weekend !!!

Do you think it is realistic to try to deport 12 million illegal immigrants?

Has congress approved more $ to increase border security more than what Obama has already done?

How much would you increase $ for deportation and border security? Where would you get the $?

What is the alternative?

Keep letting people illegally "cut in line" and take jobs from the low income legal citizens. Imagine... That is 12 million jobs that could be done by the American citizens who have had limited academic success.

CBP Border Spend

Personally I think anyone who is against strong borders and immediate deportation is working to keep the poor Americans poor. Maybe we should hold some street blocking protests to straighten this out.

The question of course is would the poor Americans be willing to do those jobs, even if they paid more?

WP GOP Plan

It is odd that we do not simply set up refugee camps on the Mexican side of the border. That way US law does not need to come into play.

Welcoming everyone in that comes to the border just means that more people will show up at the border. Maybe this would slow if the world saw pictures of people stuck in Mexican refugee camps.

And maybe the Mexican government would watch their borders more closely if they were stuck with the illegals? Right now it seems that their government is happy to have the trafficking happening. It seems to be a thriving business.

Does anyone know, is there any law that says we need to deal with everyone that shows up at the border with inappropriate paperwork? Or can we just say, "No you are not allowed entry"

Here is an essay about the politics of Obama's order, if you are bored at work:

How Obama Boxed In Republicans With His Immigration Order

I agree with Waldman that this will difficult for GOP presidential candidates to deal with.

How would we set up refugee camps on Mexican territory?

For adults, we're free to turn them around. For children, there are laws. A 2008 law passed to prevent child trafficking requires a court hearing before deporting most unaccompanied minors back to their country of citizenship.

Laurie,
The question is how can either party help the poor legal citizens understand that the illegal residents are taking their jobs, keeping their wages low and making their children hungry.

Sean,
Technically the Mexican government or an NGO would run the camps, we would just pay for them as is often the case.

Yes it does look like the anti-trafficking law did have an unforseen consequence.

Conservatism at its finest...pit neighbor against neighbor...when the real problem is the institutions that govern them.

"neighbor against neighbor"

I asked Paul U. something the other day and never got an answer.

"Do you consider people who violate our borders or over stay their visa as "immigrants"?"

Maybe this question can be tweaked for you. I am interested in your view...

Please elaborate, I am curious.

Yes, it is. The simple solution is to simply pass a law sharing the Social Security "no-match" system with ICE. This would find at least 9 million of the 12 million, and they could be notified they were now "guest workers" and must register or be deported. Add to that strict enforcement of the e-Verify system for new hires, as a couple states did, and most of these illegals will SELF-deport. If we have to double the number of agents doing background checks, so be it. But these two measures would pretty much stem the tide of illegal crossings for simple economic opportunity, leaving only the criminal elements for the Border Patrol. I like Johnson's bill with the "guest worker" provision. I think that's the "compromise" we need.
