So what did you think of Trump's speech?  I give him a B...

I think he had better get some Democrats on board because I don't think the hard core fiscal Conservatives are going support his spending ways.

How do you propose he "get Democrats on board"? Isn't it the job of Democrats to "see the light" and "Get right"? This "oppose everything" just doesn't make sense to the average voter.

The GOP doing it for the past 6 years didn't make sense to the average voter either and yet that is exactly what the GOP did. And unfortunately the Dems must think it worked for the GOP.

I mean some Dems may agree to the healthcare proposal if the credits for the low income folks are big enough and if wealthier people can not get them.

However the Hard Core Conservatives are against this... So it will be interesting to see if they can get anything passed.

I think you are again making that assumption that all things are equal, that for instance opposing Obama's policies is the same as opposing Trump's policies, and that's simply not the way the average voter sees things. Ill-informed or misinformed as they may be, they nonetheless know the difference between somebody ramming something down their throats and somebody trying to pull it back out. Trump had it right in saying that we can have progress if both sides compromise. Right now that seems a totally foreign concept to Democrats. Putting partisanship aside, there should be enough people in the sensible middle to come up with good solutions to these "problems."

True that. Majorities of the American people voted in favor of President Obama twice.

"Trump had it right in saying that we can have progress if both sides compromise."

What is Trump willing to compromise on?

"Putting partisanship aside, there should be enough people in the sensible middle to come up with good solutions to these "problems.""

That was equally true for the last eight years as well.

And per Sean's point... Technically the majority of Americans voted for "Obama like" policies for 3 elections in a row. It definitely seems that they were willing recipients of those policies.

And it looks like ACA is becoming more popular now that it is being threatened.

How's that song go... "You don't know what you have until its gone..."

Propose something we want, I suppose. We are a government party, and if government doesn't work, we are blamed, and that's true even when we aren't in charge of the government.

Republicans have won the popular vote for president only once since 1988. The most recent election wasn't that closed. The American people voted for Hillary Clinton.

Why must Trump do the compromising? Republicans have been "compromising" for at least the last eight years because Democrats simply will not. Remember Obamacare was passed when over half of the population objected to it, and with not a single Republican vote. If it was a "good solution" it should have been supported by a bipartisan majority. And since Democrats are the party of government and have been moving us steadily leftward for decades, putting us "back" to where we should be must of necessity involve their compromising with the Republicans who supposedly never wanted to "go there" in the first place. Their steadfast refusal to repeal and replace Obamacare is the prime example. It's hopelessly broken and their singular, strenuous effort is to blame the Republicans for its inevitable collapse.

"Why must Trump do the compromising?"

You're the one who said "Trump had it right in saying that we can have progress if both sides compromise."

So, then, one would presume that he has areas where he's willing to give a little.

I don't think Trump would consider many things "compromising", he is not a fiscal conservative... He is just a guy who wants to be loved and cheered by the masses.

Remember Egocentrism

So technically the compromises will be between the Dems and GOP... Will the moderates in both groups choose to work together or will they let the Progressives and Tea Party folks stop all progress?

Why must Trump do the compromising?

Because he set an unreasonable opening negotiation position. If, in a negotiation if your opening position is that the earth is flat, you can pretty much count on the fact that you will have to do some compromising in order to get a deal done.

It's basic to negotiating theory, is that you don't give something for nothing. It is, on occasion, possible to get nothing for nothing, however.

Trump was briefly acclaimed by Republicans because he demonstrated an ability to read a speech off a teleprompter. Wasn't it not so long ago when President Obama was attacked by those same Republicans for doing the same thing?
