Thanksgiving Talk Prep

VOX Most people are bad at arguing.
These 2 techniques will make you better.

I think this piece is worth a read, and it aligns with my forth coming DEMs / GOPers discussion.

Happy Thanksgiving !!!

Humans Give Up on Clean Power?

From Laurie:

Off topic link about climate change from K. Drum. I am sure my view that more R and D is needed has been influenced by K. Drum posts.

The World Is Giving Up On Climate Change

Bringing this topic up again is a waste of time as no one here is persuadable, but the other topics also go nowhere and this one is more important.

Tax Returns Stay Hidden. For Now

VOX The Supreme Court lets Trump keep his tax returns secret — for now

American Progress Case for Congress

Youtube Montage of Trump's Tax Return Promises

He promised over and over to release them, and he has not...
Now he is fighting against releasing them again...
What is he fighting so hard to keep hidden?

Picture with Corpse. No problem.

NYT Trump / Esper Demand Resignation of Navy Secretary

As I have said before, this action by Trump makes me dislike him even more than the Ukraine actions. The idea that he thinks it is okay for a field commander of the US Military to pose his team in front of a dead human as if it was a prize lion...

Next is he going to say it is okay if Gallagher takes the dead man home, has him stuffed / mounted and placed over his fireplace? :-(

Here is some more background regarding this disturbed individual...

Not to mention that Trump totally undermined the US Military Justice system for some possible votes.

Hypocrisy at Its Finest

Reuters Trump wants Senate trial, expects Joe Biden to testify: White House

So let's see...
  • Trump refuses to testify in his own defense.
  • Trump refuses to let his personnel testify in his defense.
  • Trump blames the House for not having first hand testimony.
  • Trump wants witnesses at his trial to testify about things that happen years ago and have nothing to do with the accusations against him.
  • And I certain that the Trump True Believers are thinking this makes sense
  • My usual question, if it was Obama doing this. Would they feel the same way
I must say that Trump is a master of distraction and manipulation.  And his followers seem to be willing participants. "Don't look behind the curtain...  Watch what I am pointing at."
“President Trump wants to have a trial in the Senate because it’s clearly the only chamber where he can expect fairness and receive due process under the Constitution,” spokesman Hogan Gidley said in a statement.

We would expect to finally hear from witnesses who actually witnessed, and possibly participated in corruption - like Adam Schiff, Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, and the so-called Whistleblower, to name a few,” Gidley said, referring to House of Representatives Intelligence Committee Chairman Schiff, who is leading an impeachment inquiry into Trump.
It is kind of like a burglar caught in the act of robbing the house calling the homeowners as witnesses to prove that they legally purchased everything in the house.  Like it has any bearing on if he is guilty or not.

Sondland Just Followed Orders

Fox News Sondland Coverage

NYT We Followed President's Orders

I still think our genius transparent President who orchestrated the activities and made the wonderful call should testify publicly under oath.  Why wouldn't he?  He does work for the American people... Right?

Has he not heard said that "the truth will set you free"? :-)

Why is the GOP treating our public servant with such kid gloves?

Climate Change Continuum

So where do you fit on my newest creation?  Jerry and I were arguing Climate Change again and I said that I like the work of Judith Curry.  She is an expert who has the blog Climate Etc.  My belief is that she believes:
  • the use of fossil fuels is warming the climate
  • that the science is still immature, especially the forecasting
  • other factors may be more significant in the future
  • people need low cost energy
  • clean energy & cheap energy must be balanced
  • people should be preparing for extreme whether events either way
  • alarmists abound and are confusing people
So I know that Jerry is a Denier and most of the other commenters are Believers or CAGW'ers... But I was not sure where that leaves folks like Judith and myself.  So I created a new continuum for your comments and critiques !!! :-)   (click it to zoom)

No Need for Courts / Discipline

Apparently King Trump knows better than the military courts. I assume he is just doing it to distract from his bigger problems.

FOX Trump grants clemency to 2 Army officers accused of war crimes, restores rank to Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher
"Lorance was six years into serving a 19-year sentence at Fort Leavenworth for ordering his soldiers to open fire and kill three men in Afghanistan. Lorence’s supporters say he killed Taliban fighters. Nine members of his unit testified against him, saying the men were innocent."
"Gallagher, a 15-year SEAL whose case garnered national attention, was found not guilty of murdering an ISIS fighter in Iraq in 2017 but was convicted in July of a lesser charge of posing for a photo with the dead ISIS prisoner's corpse."
Then there is the question if he will start pardoning the members of his personal swamp?  It is amazing how many of his friends and partners have been found guilty.

Politico Roger Stone was found guilty. Now all eyes turn to Trump. The president will face pressure to pardon Stone after the GOP operative was found guilty of charges brought by special counsel Robert Mueller.

And likely that he may join them in prison if his tax records are released... No wonder he is scared.

Second Memo Released

The Hill READ: Memo of Trump's first call with Zelensky

Who the FRICK CARES...  I want to hear the actual recording of the call in question...

I don't want some incomplete memo if there is a recording.

I mean how bad is it if Trump is not willing to let us listen to it ?
What Law and Order person would not be demanding the recording?
The GOP apparently is no longer the party of Law and Order. :-(

And We Are Off...

NYT Impeachment Hearings Open With Revelation on Trump’s Ukraine Pressure

The Hill Trump campaign dismisses Taylor, Kent testimony as 'third-hand opinions'

WE Democrat met with laughter after suggesting Trump testify before impeachment committee

CNN GOP's defense of Trump, Democrats' rebuttal and more from the impeachment inquiry

FOX Impeachment hearing testimony details Trump pursuit of Ukraine ‘investigations,’ as GOP decries ‘hearsay’

I liked this summary from CNN: 6 reasons to impeach Trump and 4 reasons not to impeach Trump. CNN's Marshall Cohen wrote an extremely detailed examination of the arguments, which I've tried to distill as much as possible.

Reasons to impeach Trump
  1. Trump solicited election meddling from Ukraine
  2. There was a quid pro quo for a White House invite
  3. There was a quid pro quo for US military aid
  4. Trump's directives to his lawyer Rudy Giuliani undercut US policy
  5. Trump improperly removed US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch
  6. The Trump administration obstructed the inquiry

Reasons not to impeach Trump
  1. The process of the inquiry was fatally flawed
  2. Presidents have vast foreign policy powers
  3. Limited insight into Trump's state of mind
  4. Ukraine got the military assistance after all

More on Political Relativity

This explains political relativity very well, and in a very funny way.

I may find this more amusing than most because I continue to be called a Socialist by Conservatives, and a Conservative by Liberals. When typically in tests I score as a "Moderate Republican" per this comic.

Can A Sitting President be Investigated for Crimes?

NYT Trump Tax Return Case Confronts Supreme Court With a Momentous Choice

This will be very interesting to see how they rule?
And if the GOP voters will be happy with either ruling?
I mean what may help Trump may help future DEM Presidents.

Though I still wonder what Trump has hidden in those tax returns that he is so scared to show us like he promised he would... :-)

Trump Demands What He Would Not Do

Yahoo Trump demands whistleblower testify in person — the thing he refused to do in Mueller probe

At least he is consistent in being a hypocrite and a liar... :-)  It will be interesting to see if he finally turns over his tax returns or if keeps trying to hide them?  Apparently he has no secrets from his supporters and will fight like hell to ensure they never find them...

NYT Trump Taxes: Appeals Court Rules President Must Turn Over 8 Years of Tax Returns

I still wonder often how the Trump True Believers rationalize him hiding so much normally open information from them?  (ie Tax Returns, Testifying Under Oath, Actual recording of that perfect discussion with the President of Ukraine, etc)

Why would he need to read the doctored summary instead of just letting us hear the actual recorded call?  Is it that bad?

Wealth and Income Rights?

The Five Best Sentences (ie S1 - S4)
  1. You can not legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
  2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
  3. The government can not give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from someone else.
  4. You can not multiply wealth by dividing it.
  5. When half the people get the idea that they do not half to work, because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work, because someone else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end for any nation.
A friend posted the above list on FB. It seemed one one of those silly overly simplistic Conservative memes, so I kept it for further thought and discussion.  So let's give it a try...

Before starting, I will pose the normal question... What is FAIR taxation? (ie T1 - T4)

  1. Fair would be if we took the total cost of government, divided it by the number of adult able bodied citizens. And each adult then paid their fair share of the bill. (ie Dues concept)
  2. Fair would be if total cost of government was divided by the total income of every adult able bodied citizen. And each citizen paid their fair share of the bill. (ie Percent of Winnings to the House Concept)
  3. Fair would be if total cost of government was divided by the total income - some base living cost (~$25,000?) of every adult able bodied citizen. And each citizen paid their fair share of the bill for every $ they make above the base living. (ie Percent of Winnings above Base Cost to the House Concept)
  4. Fair would be if taxes and credits/programs were set to reduce the net income and wealth gap between the adult able bodied citizens. This means high income and wealthy people pay significantly higher rates than other citizens in attempt to attain a fair society.(ie Equalization concept)
My view is that T3 is probably the most "FAIR" method, and the USA is close to this since wealthier people may pay higher rates, but they also shelter a lot of wealth gains from taxes by not selling the assets.  If you doubt this just checkout how families use the step up basis technique and trusts to avoid paying taxes on their gains.  Where as us working stiffs have few to no shelters available to us.  We work and almost every dollar is taxed via payroll or income taxes.  And if you make so little that you can afford to put almost nothing into a 401K or IRA... You just pay taxes...

S1. You can not legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
This obviously seems incorrect, since welfare payments, food stamps, the medicare system and the disability system have allowed many truly poor people to live safely and humanely. Of course the problem is that some of them get comfortable and stop striving to improve, work, learn and become independent.

S2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
Now if everyone worked for their income and wealth increases, this would be correct.  However citizens with a lot of capital, land, investments, etc really do not need to "work" for those income and wealth increases. Especially if they inherited it from their Parents or other family members.

So where does "luck" fit into our system, if one is born with a silver spoon and another born with a lead spoon...  How does our society want to address this? Do the silver spoon folks get to claim that they "worked" for it?  While looking down on the less fortunate folks?

S3. The government can not give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from someone else.
This is true and yet somewhat silly.  The reason I say this is because the wealth and land rights of every citizen really only exist because our government says they do.  This is why you have land titles, incorporation documents, etc that are registered with the government.  Without our governments we would be back to a time of war lords where the strong could take what they want. And the cost for this protection is that we as citizens agree to live with in the rules of our society. (ie government)

S4. You can not multiply wealth by dividing it.
Now I am not even sure what this one is trying to say. However of course a government can facilitate the multiplication of wealth by taking it and spending it wisely. Ensuring we have great highways, educated workers, clean water, healthy workers, etc do wonders for multiplying wealth.

Of course it can also waste wealth by enabling dependency, spending too much on providing services, passing pointless regulations, etc.

S5. When half the people get the idea that they do not half to work, because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work, because someone else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end for any nation.
This is also true and yet somewhat silly. Now I agree that there are some true dead beats out there, but I put it at maybe 1% - 3% of the population. Certainly not anywhere near 50%.  And please remember that most middle class folks are just paying their fair share of the taxes...  It is the upper 20%  who are paying more than their "fair share". And they may not be doing so depending on what you think regarding the "wealth tax avoidance" topics above.

Future
The big question is how are we going to manage wealth creation and distribution when ever more jobs become automated? Will the people holding the capital get to keep all the gains while those who lost their jobs become impoverished?  I am assuming we the people and our government will need to face this reality at some point.

Of course with the tribes refusing to collaborate it will be a bumpy road.

What Behaviors will GOP Enable?

NYT Analysis: House Impeachment Inquiry Vote Underscores Intense Polarization

So apparently the GOP is dedicated to protecting a President who obviously used the office of President of the USA and the tax dollars of the US citizens to pressure a foreign government to:
work with his personal lawyer
publicly announce that they would investigate his primary Democratic opponent
publicly announce that they would investigate Ukranian / Democratic interference in the 2016 election (a debunked theory) (more debunking)

So the question now is will the GOP politicians and voters be able to swallow Trump's new message...
"It is okay that I broke the rules and withheld
US Defense dollars from their intended purpose
for potential personal gains. I am Trump and
the rules do not apply to me, since I need
emperor like powers to fight the government
that you elected."
The scary thing is that I assume it will work.  People seem very capable of ignoring the sins of "their politician".  I mean just consider that ZERO GOP representatives voted to even investigate this issue further.  Does anyone think that would be the case of this was a Democratic President?

So apparently law and order is not that important to voters and politicians.  What matters is he my guy or their guy "breaking the rules"?
