Perils of Rating Teachers

A very interesting link from an incredibly bright reader.

Perils of Rating Teachers The Washington Post - Jay Mathews
Class Struggle Archives The Washington Post - Jay Mathews

Any thoughts regarding what we in the RAS community should take and learn from this Washington DC based post and commentary?

Remember: They have lots of variation within their student body...

I think there are a lot of people out there who think the way to address climate issues is to develop more complicated thermometers.

LOL on thermometers!

Such data is generally not useful in current environment because we generally cannot act on it, like give raises to the better teachers, fire the worst.

R-Five,
That sad reality hit me after finishing my latest posting.

If you are stuck with your current employees/mgrs/spvrs and you can't offer them carrots or threaten them with sticks... Therefore they feel no incentive to improve, beyond their own sense of intrinsic reward. Maybe measuring is pointless after all...

You would think the folks in the environment would be interested, if only to make it a better place to work and for a sense of personal pride.... I personally could not take punching a clock in an environment I disliked...

Guess I am blessed !!! By the way, everybody has days they are not looking forward to work. Hopefully they are less than 10%, or maybe you need a new job/career. Life's too short to be unhappy 40+ hours per week. And you probably can get by without that expensive gadget, car, house, cell phone, cable, etc...
