Trumps Most Incompetent Pick

Can anyone tell me what makes Betsy DeVos qualified for this position?

And why so many GOP politicians are willing to ignore her lack of experience, education, management experience, etc?

DeVos' support for private schools is why she is Trump's pick. Also Donald likes rich people, and doesn't take schools very seriously. Betsey's ignorance about schools is something, I am sure, shocked everybody, and given his druthers, I am sure Donald wishes now he had picked someone else, but not backing down is key to Trump's self image, and so I am sure he will just find a way to live with his mistake.

Donald is a creature of impulse. He isn't someone who believes in information, or thinking things through. He loves the anarchy aggressive ignorance creates.

What was funny about DeVos and what shocked a lot of people is information about education isn't hard to come by. I mean there are parent teacher conferences, PTA meetings. There are some advocacy groups out there which are very eager to explain the basics of education policy. There is a lot of parental involvement. And DeVos had been involved in education reform issues. Yet it turned out, and this pretty much shocked everyone who has sat through hours of discussion on these issues, that she knew nothing about basic educational policy. How could this possibly happen? How did she manage to avoid information that is literally everywhere for those interested in education issues?

Well if you go to Private schools and your kids go to Private schools to avoid real students/ parents, and if you get your news from Fox News... It is pretty easy to get a warped perception of reality and be ignorant.

I mean look what Ed MN does to warp people who are buried in the system... :-)

Private schools get public aid and have the same problems public schools have. When you are involved in education issues, it's just so difficult to avoid the knowledge that Betsey seems to lack. It's very curious really, how was she able to manage it?

The Private schools she would have spent time in had NONE of the challenges that Northport Elementary has. Just like the Kimberly Lane elementary doesn't... And those 2 schools are maybe 8 miles apart...

Well I guess they have kids and Teachers... But beyond that... Nothing.

I am sure they had disabled kids, learning challenged kids. As much as Betsey DeVos is a problematic pick, she isn't a monster.

She isn't a monster, she is just likely very naïve and she thinks she knows more than she does... A very dangerous combination...

I always love when people say that the Wayzata district and Kimberly Lane in particular are SO INCREDIBLE... When the reality is that the Parents and Kids are SO INCREDIBLE...

Are they? I am sure they are fine, and I support them, but the school districts I admire are the ones who take on the bigger challenges.

Exactly. Unfortunately many people like DeVos seem to have a different view.

They want to just keep segregating the Lucky and Unlucky kids even more than we have today...

It's sad that DeVos inherited the Amway fortune instead of actually helping to build it by selling detergent door to door.

I am concerned about her lack of knowledge of the law related to education of students with disabilities and also how her policies will affect low income, ELL and other at risk students.

I am not all that invested, actually, in cabinet picks. Obviously the DeVos choice is a bad one, but the Department of Education is going to suffer in a Trump administration, and it's quite possible that a competent pick could damage education more than the incompetent Ms. DeVos. In any event, we elected this guy, and so it's only fair that we get stuck with his picks, at least while he is an office. Maybe voters will take their responsibilities more seriously next time, should there be a next time.

Laurie, Agreed.

Hiram, I agree... Maybe both sides will offer someone who is rational and moderate. Yeah like that would happen...

Were Obama's education secretaries not rational or moderate? And I don't recall any problem with Bush's, really. As bitterly partisan as I often am, I have always found that both parties have a strong commitment to education. We just fight about the details. Presidents of neither party have ever displayed the level of contempt for our schools that the nomination of Ms. DeVos represents. Trump is a political novice, and he makes the kind of mistakes one wouldn't expect of a first time candidate for a city council. That's just something we all have to live with.
