From what little I understand about this, it seems Republicans should come back with a budget about $3 billion less than their current bills, and try again. Then "negotiate." Dayton thinks he gets points with a shutdown. He was wrong before; he's wrong now.

I am just hoping that the GOP actually gets all the bills passed in time.

And that hopefully they have not loaded up the important bills with a bunch of silly Far Right unrelated stuff.

The GOP HAS passed all the bills on time, and the Governor has vowed to veto every one of them, sight unseen. And what is "silly" may be entirely a matter of common sense versus ideological rigidity.

And having looked at some of the details, I think the GOP hasn't "loaded" those bills ENOUGH. That's why I think the GOP should counter with an offer LOWER than what was vetoed, with MORE policy riders, and then negotiate back to somewhere in between. Let Dayton have his shutdown and take the whole blame for it, just like before.

I think you forget the punishment for over reach and ignoring half the citizens of MN.

The DEMs learned it again in the last election. Maybe it is time for the GOP to learn again...

You are entitled to your opinion. My belief is that, when the truth is known about these bills, far more than half will agree with the GOP, and be upset with the Governor for preventing tax relief for seniors, farmers, businesses. And for preventing more money for schools and the environment.

So you actually believe that 50+ % of Minnesotans will be happy if the GOP blocks educational / environmental funding, delays buffer strip implementation, etc? And they pass abortion restrictions instead... Exactly what state do you think you live in?

Maybe you would fit better in ND or SD... :-)

I don't think 50+% will see it as the GOP "blocking" anything. They PASSED all of the funding bills, and it was the Governor who vetoed them, largely sight unseen. The details of the bills aren't going to matter to most folks, and I don't think the Governor can make the case that they're "poison" because he didn't even take part in the negotiations to construct them. People will see who is making the effort and who is standing in the way.

Spin will matter. All Dayton needs to do is identify one or two poison pills to show how the GOP tried to play games again.

Maybe some voucher feature that takes money from neighborhood schools.

I am not saying they should not try. But they also should not whine if it backfires on them.

I like to think the GOP has gotten smarter on the "spin cycle" and it seems the DFL has not. I look at the evidence of history, recognizing the last time Dayton pulled this political grandstanding stunt he had a lot better basis for it, and still lost the PR battle. The way I hear it, as soon as the battle began-- end of session without a budget-- he was off on a five-city fly-around campaign. After the terrible reception he got at the first two, the rest were quickly cancelled, and he eventually gave up almost everything he said he "needed."

Time will tell. :-)

Minnesota has a balanced budget constitutional requirement. So if Dayton wants to spend more (which I'm sure he does), he has to come up with a way to pay for it that Republicans will accept, and then justify that to a (I suspect) skeptical public.
