Trump Reversals

Besides lying often, Trump has a terrible time being consistent....
  • Comey is great, Comey is terrible.
  • TPP Bad, TPP Maybe, TPP Bad
  • Russia good, Russia Bad, Russia Good
  • Hold Russia /Iran accountable, Not...

Trump sees himself as a negotiator. He says things for effect. He doesn't want to reveal his bottom line. He doesn't dispel the notion that there isn't a bottom line. He rarely stands by what he says because what he says is for him rarely more than a negotiator. Trump is an American type. The con man. The rube who is smarter than the city slicker, in Trump's case all his life, the Manhattan slicker who felt looked down upon all his life by the real estate deep state in New York City.

Trump defines himself as a negotiator, but I believe that negotiation forms a pretty small part of how politics is conducted, or even how deals are made. Consider the TPP thing. Trump prefers bilateral negotiations to negotiations through multilateral organizations. The reason is pretty obvious; in the bilateral negotiations he has experience with, he has been in the power position. It was easy for him to bully the widows and orphans he wanted to evict. But what he is beginning to realize is that in his new job, he isn't in the power position at all. With respect to the TPP, he put us in the outside position looking in, as Pacific rim powers for coalitions of which we are not a part and which in some cases will be dominated if not by our adversaries, but at the very least, our competitors.

It is amazing how fast and often the "perception of reality" changes inside Trump's mind then... :-)

Yes. He is obviously very astute and very good at sifting through information.

What is it that is said about successful executives? That they "guess right" more than 50% of the time, when only incomplete information is available.

John said...

So Friday he was going to apply additional sanctions on Russia...
By Monday he reversed that position...
What changed except his erratic views?

A week ago he announced TPP may be good and we may get into it.
Now he is against it again...
What changed except his erratic views?

I think Trump has some sever ADHD going on...

It's hard to tell the liar in chief from his lying followers anymore. They all sound the same.

So, you KNOW what changed on each of these issues? Is it possible that additional study is causing a smart guy to mentally test one idea, and then its opposite, by soliciting feedback? Or at least musing out loud? How do YOU reach a decision on a complex issue? Why must somebody else's decision-making process be a cause of such overwrought conjecture as to his motivations or his ability? Can we chalk it up to 3 characters-- either TDS or H8R?

If you're correct, then it's clear that he speaks on something before taking the time to consider and comprehend it, and thus has to change course. How is that better?

Better because it demonstrates he is considering all sides carefully, reacting to and soliciting input-- a well-known characteristic of his management style.

John said...

But most good managers of that style do not solicit feedback over a loud speaker... While stoking the fears and hopes of people who will be impacted.

So if someone bombs us, and he thinks it's Russia, and he bombs them back, it's okay if it turns out not to have been Russia. Got it. Great leadership.

Moose, you are once again inadvertently right. As I said, a good manager is one that makes the right decision, based on limited information, better than 50% of the time. One would assume that the more consequential decisions are considered more carefully, and more information sought, to avoid the sort of terrible (and ridiculous) decisions you suggest.

John, you raise an interesting point. Since every decision Trump makes is "broadcast over a loudspeaker," is it really that strange the deliberations would be likewise? Would it be better for him to do such musing personally, or to have it bandied about by countless leaks, crazy rumors and media speculation?

Some of it, I think, is to find out what the media "thinks" he should do, so he can do the opposite.

John said...

That's funny I thought his top counselors were the talking heads on Fox and friends...

jerrye92002 said...

Fox is not "the media."

John said...

Well there is one thing we can agree on... :-)

It is more of an echo chamber for the Far Right.

"One would assume..."

The only thing that can logically be assumed about Trump is that if it doesn't benefit him, it's not worthwhile.

jerrye92002 said...

Where do you get that "far right" nonsense? They are far more popular than CNN/MSNBC. Are you prepared to label those outlets far left?

Moose, you seem to have no qualms about "assuming" you understand Trump's every thought, motivation and process. And it is not logical to assume you do.

Anonymous said...

I'm not assuming anything. I'm judging him by his actions.

I guess this can go here also. :-)

As for bias... Media Bias Ratings

The GOP can stand in their echo chamber until they find themselves voted out of power I suppose. There is a big world beyond their perception of reality.

In terms of media bias, it's not the word I would use, but it is true that Trump is almost universally reviled in the media, not just in the news shows but the entertainment shows as well. I have never seen anything like it. Even the news side of Fox News is at least mildly anti Trump.

I don't think the majority are "anti-Trump". I think they are simply shocked at how blatantly and stupidly he lies, and how terrible the scandals / turn over have been in his offices.

Of course, to a Trump True Believer they sound "anti-Trump" because they have to spend a good chunk of time fact checking him. And since he is often making things up, that fact checking is rarely flattering.

I think people are very much anti Trump. For one thing, he is in such bad taste. He isn't the kind of guy who gets invited to the nicer parties.

Anti-Trump to me means out to get him.

I have many people who I choose to not associate with, and yet I have no ill will towards them.
