I think it's John Roberts searching for a way to protect the court. He knows that in this 21st century, it doesn't make sense to turn over important decisions to the sort of people whose life's ambition it was to get lifetime appointments to jobs where they have absolute power while also getting summers off, and he knows people are beginning to realize that.

The Supreme Court has power, because people choose to think it has power. But I think that is coming to an end. I believe by the end of this decade, Supreme Court rulings will be considered advisory only, without compelling legal authority.
