I don't know whether government will be shut down, but I do know I am tired of government being held hostage. We need to find a strategy that puts a stop to that.

Unlikely to happen given the current debt load and deficits.

One can only over spend what is collected for awhile before disaster occurs.

I have noticed in my years that the only times we talk about the deficit and the debt are when the debt limitation comes up and during the election season. At neither time do we have a subbstantive discussion about what controlling an reducing debt might mean. To do that, we have to understand what we are as a nation and what serious changes we want to make.

Federal govenment is basically an insurance company with an army. To reduce, assuming no increase in taxes, the debt we have to do some combination of two things. We have reduce defense spending, cut back on our defense commitments, at home and around the world, and we have to cut health care and retirement benefits. What does doing those things look like? How do we make doing those things work? What will America look like them after we have done them?

These are discussions I would actually like to have. Why don't we have them?

Because the current voters like "low premiums" and "big payouts".

And they are happy to pass that extra cost to the next generations. :-(

There are all kinds of things we can do. What bugs me is that we are not having that discussion. Health costs are a big issue. Instead of paying more, we can limit costs. Price controls of various kinds. Or we can limit the care we provide.

What we do now, in various ways, is shift the cost burden in various ways. We shift the burden to insurers. How about structuring the way we pay for health care in ways that make that unnecessary?

Government "Rationing care" or "Setting Prices" are definitely non-starters for many on both sides.

The Left thinks people deserve everything whether they paid for it or not.

The Right thinks companies should be allowed to gouge Customers.

And many Americans think they should not pay more for living an unhealthy lifestyle.

If we are going to reduce health care costs, we either have to reduce care, or reduce what we pay for care. Or is there a third alternative?

Health care providers live in a world where different customers can pay different amounts but all are provided with care so they charge different amounts based on the ability to pay. Should that be the case? Is that one of the issues we bring to the table once we decide to balance the budget?

Most people in one way or another have the burden of people who make unhealthy choices. The worst health choice of all is to grow old.
