It was interesting that these SA citizens understand something that most folks who vote DFL don't seem to. Illegal aliens take jobs and deprress the wages for America's working poor.

The Republican problem is to continue the status quo, which allows their business constituencies access to cheap, undocumented labor.

Personally I like the solution to lock down the borders tighter.
Deport all the illegals and make them "go to the back of the line" for legal immigration.
And then increase the number of legal immigrants allowed yearly if Americans want to help more people come to the USA.
Whereas the Dems appear to want to reward the "line budgers" for jumping in front of those who honored America's borders and process. And they are happy to keep border security lax to encourage more "line budgers" to cross the border and avoid the legal system.
Somehow they seem to think they can have their cake (ie encourage illegals) and eat it too. (raise wages)
Hopefully the US citizens will figure out that these two goals are mutually exclusive.
John, I think you have the right solution-- require illegals to "go back home" and come back the right way, as guest workers, with an increased (initial) allotment for such. You don't have to deport very many, you simply make it illegal to employ an illegal, and they will self-deport. As soon as they come back, they get their former job, making everybody happy.
I think any discussion of illegal immigration should start with an understanding that time is on their side, and that the longer we wait to implement any policy with regard to illegal immigrants, the more favorable any policy will be towards them. The reason for that is simple demographics. Children of illegal immigrants are citizens, and as they age voters. Their proportion of the voting population will increase over time, and they can be counted on to elect more and more politicians who will opposes sending mom and dad, grandma and grandpa back to the old country.
So the political upshot for folks who want to shut down illegal immigration is that if you don't like the deal you are offered today, just wait, the deal you will be offered tomorrow will be worse.

My question is: Why should there be "a deal" at all? Let us figure out what is the right thing to do, and do that. How hard can it be? Start with "illegal means illegal." Rather than ignore all manner of lawbreaking that began with an illegal crossing of the border, let's offer ONLY three things: 1) no one may knowingly employ an illegal alien and must check with the federal e-Verify (and Social Security admin) before hiring, 2) we will identify all current illegals (about 90%) using false SS numbers and give them a year or so to: 3) Use the"wide front door" we have for those who want to enter legally and become guest workers, if they know where there is a job (and of course they do). Those working here LEGALLY can have family with them, and can eventually apply for citizenship, if they like. Hopefully that would be with a greatly reformed immigration and naturalization process.
