I am disappointed in senate democrats for their education bill which doesn't even fund schools at a level to keep up with inflation.

I am a bit miffed in the way that inflation is ignored across the board in all this talk about the large surplus.

So if they don't spend all the $ and they don't pass many tax cuts, where does the surplus go? does it just roll into some kind of reserve? not that I think that is likely. I expect the GOP will get some of their tax cuts and some of it will get used on transportation.

I just hope they will find some more $ for schools, though it doesn't seem likely as even the senate dems are not asking for it. So please contact your reps. maybe with more $ we could bring the MCA pass rate at my school up to 20%. Besides that I could really use at least a small raise to give my younger son at least a little help with his college tuition.

I think you should push them to just give charters the same funding as the status quo Public Schools. As we have discussed, they get a lot more money per child.

Unfortunately it is your DFL friends and their Ed MN cohorts who are preventing this from happening. Hopefully someday they will put the kids before their adult friends.

It seems that the GOP is the biggest barrier to maintaining current programs in E-12 education.

"Dayton’s budget proposal calls for a 3 percent increase in the state’s per-pupil funding formula over two years. The Senate would increase funding by 2 percent, the House by 1.2 percent."

p.s. your blog is more interesting when you offer new comments/ ideas rather than making the same points repeatedly

Laurie,
Why again should the tax payers give the education system more if they are unwilling to be held accountable for their results or embrace changes to improve the system?

Tenure related job security, tenure related compensation,
tenure related teaching positions, restrictive teacher licensing, etc are all excellent for Teachers who have been in the District for 6+ years, however they are terrible for the students who need the most help.

I will happily lobby for more education funding when the Public School system shows that it is serious about putting the student's needs first. Currently I think any additional funding we supply will just be frittered away.

By the way, speaking of repeating one's self... When are you going to stop just asking for more money and start demanding some change from the DFL and Ed MN.

If they were not trying to maintain the Ed MN / Public School near monoply, your school would be better funded.

btw with our current dumb method of budgeting "more money" means maintaining current programs / staffing. How do you feel about cutting staff / programs and or increasing class sizes at your children's schools? Do you support the house and senate bills to cut education funding.

(most parents who read about teacher layoffs in their districts are going to see this as a cut to education)

Apparently inflation is real low right now. Why would these layoffs occur?

about -Why would these layoffs occur? Maybe you should check with the business manager or superindendent in your district.

I believe most districts are planning layoffs based on anticipated funding levels.Seems kind of dumb to me when we have the budget surplus.
