For me, I think today's Republican Party is the logical result of the decision by Republicans over a number of years, to reject the legitimacy of this federal government as presently understood. Just this morning, I responded to a commentator who claimed that taxation was a form of pilferage, that is, a form of theft. Theft is the unlawful taking of property. In order to be theft, taxation must be unlawful. That means the political authority enacting the tax must be illegitimate. Let me stop here and ask, is my logic here in any way faulty or unfair? Have I gotten something wrong?

I think you are on the correct track.
I usually blame our current situation on Reagan's ending the fairness Doctrine rules.
People like Rush Limbaugh then could profit by preaching fear, victimhood and conspiracies.
Then came along cable news, the internet, social media, etc and people (sheep) went into their preferred echo chamber...
In my view, people pay too much attention to the media. We don't elect them, but we do elect the politicians. Blaming the media is a way of shifiting blame which properly belongs to us.

Unfortunately our population is made up of a lot of selfish and gullible people...
Therefore the end of the fairness document allowed greedy and manipulative people to prey on them for financial and power gain.
Imagine how much wiser our populace would be if only the high quality low bias news organizations existed. Like in the pre-1987 years.
