Bailouts vs Welfare

As Congress struggles with what to do, my liberal FB friends continue to argue what is the correct path?

They of course seem to think that the US should keep borrowing money and writing checks to everyone who is unemployed.

Whereas I think that we maintain a welfare system for a reason.  And it should be used to help anyone who does not have adequate resources in these times of need.

I don't think that our children should have to bear the burden of supplementing the incomes of people who do not need assistance, or who chose to live above their means and did not maintain a rainy day fund.

I am not sure where this idea got started that the Federal Government is a BIG Piggy Bank meant to eliminate the pains caused in a world full of ups and downs?

Is the kind of economic assistance we are talking about a form of welfare?

The economic interests of children, it seems to me, are inextricably tied up with the economic interests of their parents. It's the parents, after all, who earn income, and do things like put food on tables, and roofs over heads.

The fact seems to be that the virus has had a very uneven impact on the economy. Much of the aid seems to have ended up in the pockets of people like me, through no particular merit of my own. It's systemic classism, where where the system can always can be counted on to make the well off, better off.

If not welfare, what do you think it is? People given money with no expectations or requirement to pay it back that they in no way earned to improve / maintain their standard of living?

"welfare": financial support given to people in need.

Unfortunately the money went to a lot of people who have no kids...

Actually the money end up in many pockets that did not need it, that is one of the problems with this "shotgun" approach.

There are lots of labels we could attach to it. The loaded label "welfare" is one I would avoid attaching to it. Policy should not be driven by how pejorative the terms are we use to describe it.

Sure, tons of the money ended up in my pocket and I hardly needed it. It mostly remains there, not contributing to the welfare of anyone.

Maybe now is a good time for you to become even more charitable then. :-)

The good news is that there is some income threshold on many of these handouts because we got ZERO. :-)

Your expectation is that folks should have a rainy day fund to cover the government shutting down businesses during a pandemic?

John said...

People should have a rainy day fund because rainy days and recessions come in many many forms...

Last time Liberals blamed the banks / investors, this time apparently it is the government?

I'm suggesting that this isn't a typical business cycle recession and when the government is closing down businesses for public health reasons, it has a special interest in keeping people somewhat whole.

I somewhat understand your perspective, however the "government" in all reality has no money of it's own...

And worse yet it just keeps borrowing and borrowing in our children's names.

When are we going to make people responsible for their own lives, choices and efforts?

And stop passing those negative consequence down stream?

We can't even agree that the following individual needs should be met by society.

air
water
food
shelter
safety
sleep
clothing (in some cases)

I am okay with society protecting air and water quality withing reasonable levels.

As well as law enforcement and K-12 education.

After that citizens should responsible for themselves and their children most of the time.

Where as there definitely seems to be a group out there that wants to baby citizens like the children of a helicopter parent... :-)

"Oh you bumped your knee, Mommy will make it better..."

"Oh you got pregnant for the third time, Mommy will make it better and pay your bills."

"Oh you failed in school and got a questionable, come live Mommy and I will pay your bills."

Then we wonder why we have a large population of needy whiny citizens in our country. :-(

And a MASSIVE NATIONAL DEBT !!!!

Sure, we know when this will become an issue: about one minute after a Democrat is inaugurated President. (Although, some Republicans are already pretending to care now given the state of the polls.)

Now that is certainly the sad truth...
