How Far Left will They Go?

NYT There Is a Revolution on the Left. Democrats Are Bracing.
AP Democratic socialism surging in the age of Trump

Just as the Far Right voters keep tugging the GOP to the Right, it appears the Far Left voters are trying to tug the DEMs to the Left. No wonder our politics are becoming so divisive and dysfunctional.

Personally I think is bad news for the DEMs, however I never thought the GOP would be where they are now...  So only time will tell.

Remember those polarization charts, it seems we are not going to come together as a country anytime soon. :-(

Universal and affordable health care is possibility, something Trump promised as well. It the socialists take over, by the way, I don't think we see any rollback of Trump's economic protectionism any time soon either. Just like Trump, socialists believe it's up to government to pick winners and losers.

Please remember that every government intervention is the "government picking winners and losers".

The Democrats continually want to bind the hands of American businesses with more regulations, taxes, audits, enforcement, tests, rules, standards, etc...

Now some of these are good like the 1970's environmental protection action.

However some of them are simply governmental micro management or dipping excessively into the engines of our economic engine and employment.

And with all of them we burden our companies more than many other countries burden theirs. And that comes with cost and consequences.

Now if all these dem socialists are driving US cars, using US made appliances, etc they will have more credibility with me.

I am guessing they are not.

if/ when the dems are back in control in 2020 the moderate left will have the power

Laurie,

1. Your definition of moderate Left is likely pretty Liberal for folks like me.

2. Have you not been watching what the Freedom Caucus, the Tea Party and their supporters have done to the Republican Party? Do you really think the Democratic party is immune to the extremist influence?

Please remember that both sides have moving away from center...

This may not belong here, but then again it might...

the difference is the dems want to do things to improve people's lives. If the far left can get the moderate left to support their agenda halfway, the far left will vote to get half of what they want.

The far right supports very little in terms of policy for improving peoples lives. They just vote no for everything other than tax cuts and very little gets done.

I don't think the Dems are veering as hard left as Republicans would like to think. If that were true, relatively unpopular moderates like Andrew Cuomo would not be on their way to 30+-point primary victories. Sure, a Democratic Socialist can take down a more moderate Democrat in places like the Bronx. But, nationwide, we're seeing Democrats of all stripes take victories. It was only a few months ago we were talking about people like Doug Jones and Conor Lamb, after all.

Laurie,
FYI. I used your comment for a new post.

Now continuing here, If the far left and the moderate left negotiate a solution... It will be pretty far left of most Americans...

Sean,
Oh please. They were DEMs Conservative states/districts... Let's talk about where Liberal states/districts are moving.

The notion that more liberal states are electing more liberal people should hardly be considered revolutionary. What's really fascinating is that Republicans don't tend to run moderates even in areas that are more moderate. Look at the two GOP candidates for Governor in this state. Jeff Johnson, who lost decisively four years ago as a budget-cutting wonk, is now a right-wing talk radio-level Trump acolyte. Tim Pawlenty is running to the right of where he was as Governor. Where's the consternation about that? Is there any point where you would suggest that your party has veered too far to the right?

And, oh by the way, many of these so-called "left" positions favored by these candidates have broad public support. Increasing the minimum wage usually runs about 55-45 in favor. More government involvement in health care generally polls well. Basic gun control measures, like universal background checks, poll at 85%+.

John said...

Sorry, I see Jeff Johnson as a moderate...

Just as Pawlenty is trying to paint him...

Funny, I though Johnson lost because he came across as kind of a nerd who was running against an incumbent Governor. :-)

John said...

But it does look like Johnson is trying for those Trump voters...

The tribal members moving outward sure is making things different...

What is "moderate" about Jeff Johnson 2018, specifically? Because I'm not seeing it.
