Guns: Public Health Threat?

VOX Guns are a Public Health Threat

I have not read it, but the title caught my eye.

certainly. I mean, all you have to do is to enter a room where one of these "automatic rifles" is, and it will "automatically" shoot you, all by itself.

Along those lines, are opioids a public health threat?

I mean they are excellent and useful drugs for most people... And yet they destroy lives and kill 10's of thousands of citizens in the USA each year just like guns when used irresponsibly.

How do our gun problems and opioids problems differ?

They don't. Both are legal products that are sometimes used irresponsibly. The difference being that opioids, generally, do not kill anybody except the abuser. And nobody has a constitutional right to an opioid, nor can an opioid be used in self-defense against another opioid user. Hmmm. I guess they are different. One is NOT a public health problem.

I think the jury is out on your last statement...

I am less concerned about opioids affecting my personal health since I do not use them.

Though they certainly can lead to others being harmed. Driving under the influence causes many deaths each year. Or they can lead to people stealing, mugging, etc. They can turn children into orphans and cause birth defects.

And opioids may not be able to stop another opioid user... They can be used effectively to save lives and lessen pain.

Where as guns may provide some defense from other gun wielders, however as Moose says... If neither side had a gun... Neither side would need one. Health crisis solved and 37,000 people per year may live longer healthier lives.

The 2nd Amendment does make implementing Moose's simplest solution difficult.

But limiting which citizens have access to which weapons does seem very straight forward.

That's funny, because I'd also bet that if you put Nikolas Cruz in the middle of a school without a gun he doesn't shoot anybody.

Or, if Cruz KNEW that some of the teachers were armed and he would be killed very soon after opening fire, he wouldn't enter the school at all. Yours is the fantasy, that is the reality. Think about it. He PLANNED to shoot up this school, knowing it was gun free, and PLANNED to escape before police arrived to (possibly) shoot him.

And in those cases where the gunman is suicidal, the sooner he is challenged the sooner his spree ends, one way or the other. If you cannot prevent these things, and you cannot, you should use the simplest available means to reduce their severity.

Oh, and have you noticed that the first "copycat" identified after this incident had a bomb, not a gun?

Please remember that I am for both...

Allowing Teachers to conceal and carry...

and

Tightening guns laws...

I think our children's lives are worth doing both. Unlike some people... :-)
