There's a difference between the Democratic base and Democratic elected officials. Democratic elected officials are way to the right of the base, which is why AOC can say anything she wants, but a 70% highest marginal tax rate ain't coming any time soon.
David Frum has the old axiom "Republicans fear their base, and Democrats hate their base".
the far right base moved to the right many years ago. The dem base moving to the left is a more recent phenomenom.
If both the Left and Right base are becoming extremists... Like it seems they are...
Then I thank heavens for the moderating influence of politicians and the stability features built into the USA systems of government. :-)
Maybe it's the country that's moving left. It is, after all, Donald Trump who is dictating employment policies to companies. Sounds like socialism to me.

Trump definitely as attributes of both sides at times.
Trump is strongest politically in areas where capitalism is failing.
