Trump Accomplishments

White House: Trump Accomplishments

I was sent the above link, so I broke them into what I see as the main categories. Since this is a list generated by Trump, I am not sure what is real and what is fiction. So over the next day or two I hope to add some fact check links.  Here is a good starting point with good references.

Thoughts?

Economy: Lowered Taxes, Increased Government Spending, Generated Record "Boom Deficits" and Increased National Debt to Record Highs"
  • Secured $6 billion in NEW funding to fight the opioid epidemic.
  • Secured record $700 billion in military funding; $716 billion next year.
  • Signed the biggest package of tax cuts and reforms in history. After tax cuts, over $300 billion poured back in to the U.S. in the first quarter alone.
  • As a result of our tax bill, small businesses will have the lowest top marginal tax rate in more than 80 years.
  • Almost 4 million jobs created since election.
  • More Americans are now employed than ever recorded before in our history.
  • We have created more than 400,000 manufacturing jobs since my election.
  • Manufacturing jobs growing at the fastest rate in more than THREE DECADES.
  • Economic growth last quarter hit 4.2 percent.
  • New unemployment claims recently hit a 49-year low.
  • Median household income has hit highest level ever recorded.
  • African-American unemployment has recently achieved the lowest rate ever recorded.
  • Hispanic-American unemployment is at the lowest rate ever recorded.
  • Asian-American unemployment recently achieved the lowest rate ever recorded.
  • Women’s unemployment recently reached the lowest rate in 65 years.
  • Youth unemployment has recently hit the lowest rate in nearly half a century.
  • Lowest unemployment rate ever recorded for Americans without a high school diploma.
  • Under my Administration, veterans’ unemployment recently reached its lowest rate in nearly 20 years.
  • Almost 3.9 million Americans have been lifted off food stamps since the election.
  • The Pledge to America’s Workers has resulted in employers committing to train more than 4 million Americans. We are committed to VOCATIONAL education.
  • 95 percent of U.S. manufacturers are optimistic about the future—the highest ever.
  • Retail sales surged last month, up another 6 percent over last year.
  • Increased our coal exports by 60 percent; U.S. oil production recently reached all-time high.
  • United States is a net natural gas exporter for the first time since 1957.
  • Net exports are on track to increase by $59 billion this year.
Judicial Appointments: This is appreciated by religious right voters.  Not so appreciated by Libertarian leaning voters like myself.
  • Confirmed more circuit court judges than any other new administration.
  • Confirmed Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch and nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
Regulations: Good for businesses. Uncertain the impact on our water, air, etc.
  • Opened ANWR and approved Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipelines.
  • Record number of regulations eliminated.
  • Enacted regulatory relief for community banks and credit unions.
  • Cancelled the illegal, anti-coal, so-called Clean Power Plan.
Healthcare Changes: Appreciated by those who do not want to be pressured to carry high quality health insurance. Not sure if Trump is overstating his contribution to the others?
  • Obamacare individual mandate penalty GONE.
  • My Administration is providing more affordable healthcare options for Americans through association health plans and short-term duration plans.
  • Last month, the FDA approved more affordable generic drugs than ever before in history. And thanks to our efforts, many drug companies are freezing or reversing planned price increases.
  • We reformed the Medicare program to stop hospitals from overcharging low-income seniors on their drugs—saving seniors hundreds of millions of dollars this year alone.
  • Signed Right-To-Try legislation.
  • We have reduced high-dose opioid prescriptions by 16 percent during my first year in office.
  • Signed VA Choice Act and VA Accountability Act, expanded VA telehealth services, walk-in-clinics, and same-day urgent primary and mental health care.
Protectionist: People who are scared of refugees will appreciate. Though we have researched this many times. The crime rate among illegals / immigrants is less or equal to that of US Citizens. And most of the drugs come in through other ports of entry.
  • Protecting Americans from terrorists with the Travel Ban, upheld by Supreme Court.
  • Issued Executive Order to keep open Guantanamo Bay.
  • Improved vetting and screening for refugees, and switched focus to overseas resettlement.
  • We have begun BUILDING THE WALL. Republicans want STRONG BORDERS and NO CRIME. Democrats want OPEN BORDERS which equals MASSIVE CRIME.
Trade: Some benefit... But very expensive for US businesses and Consumers. We pay the tariffs and experience the loss of foreign sales. (ie exports)
  • Concluded a historic U.S.-Mexico Trade Deal to replace NAFTA. And negotiations with Canada are underway as we speak.
  • Reached a breakthrough agreement with the E.U. to increase U.S. exports.
  • NATO allies are spending $69 billion more on defense since 2016.
  • Imposed tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum to protect our national security.
  • Imposed tariffs on China in response to China’s forced technology transfer, intellectual property theft, and their chronically abusive trade practices.
Withdrew: Good or Bad?  Only time will tell.
  • Withdrew the United States from the job-killing Paris Climate Accord.
  • Withdrew from the horrible, one-sided Iran Deal.
Miscellaneous: Who Cares?
  • Helped win U.S. bid for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
  • Helped win U.S.-Mexico-Canada’s united bid for 2026 World Cup.
  • Process has begun to make the Space Force the 6th branch of the Armed Forces.
  • Moved U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem.

It seems to me that the Paris Climate Accord would be job-creating rather than job-killing. I think renewable energy creates more jobs than coal mining.

I tend to agree with you, however I think they mean jobs lost beyond coal.

The challenge we face in the USA is that it is often expensive to do business here.
- expensive employees (compared to much of the world)
- many regulations
- many law suits (ie liability, regulatory, etc)
- etc

Now if we make our energy more expensive...
It is just one more higher cost to consumers and businesses...

Will this encourage people buy "Made in America" or discourage?

Food for thought.

It's cheaper to do business in India, but surprisingly few Minnesotans want to live there.

And yet few Minnesotans will hesitate to buy products and services from India if it saves them some money.

So...
- Should we pressure US citizens to buy American to save the environment and support our livable wage...

or

- Do we support American businesses to lower their costs...

The current Liberal belief system seems to be:
- allow consumers to buy low cost product
- force US business to increase their costs

Then the Liberals wonder why US businesses close or off shore...

"many regulations"

We've discussed this zillions of times before, but AGAIN, the U.S. does not have a wildly stringent regulation set compared to other first world countries.

I have no problem with buying the best products at the best prices. It's Trump who wants to manipulate the markets.

It startles me that White House propaganda is published as if it were true. Surely we are long past the point where anything the president says has any credibility. Nobody during his career has ever regarded Donald Trump as a man of integrity. The most people are willing to say is that he is less crooked than the Clintons, and a lot of people have trouble saying that.

Sean,
That may be correct, but our consumers are not buying just from "first world countries". I was comparing battery powered stick vacuums yesterday. The Dyson was made in Indonesia and the Shark was made in China.

So my statement still stands:

The current Liberal belief system seems to be:
- allow consumers to buy low cost product
- force US business to increase their costs

Then the Liberals wonder why US businesses close or off shore...

I will add that no I do not want to adopt China, India, Mexico, Indonesia, etc's regulations or lack of.

But I do want Liberals to acknowledge that just increasing US Business Costs and Regulations when they are not willing to personally pay for them is very inconsistent.

Hiram,
This a very capitalistic viewpoint.

"I have no problem with buying the best products at the best prices."

Now are you okay when companies and consumers do this en masse which reduces the number of required American workers, their compensation and benefits?

This a very capitalistic viewpoint.

I am sure they feel that way in socialist countries as well. Trump is trying to subsidize non competitive industries. That just doesn't work well in a mature economy.

I agree that Trump is a "protectionist".

Now try to answer my question instead of switching topics...

Now are you okay with companies and consumers "buying the best products at the best prices" en masse which reduces the number of required American workers, their compensation and benefits?

As usual, this is a talking point which isn't consistent across the board. For instance, "Medicare for All" plans would on average reduce what companies pay towards health care today.

John said...

I personally think that is a definite "maybe"...

"Medicare for All" plans would MAYBE on average reduce what companies pay towards health care today."

A monopolistic government controlled insurance company offers so many opportunities for unintended negative consequences that I do not even know where to start.

And we certainly know that it will be the middle class, upper class and the businesses footing the bill.

John said...

By the way, I thought you liked Universal Coverage like Germany...

John said...

An interesting piece

Sean said...

"And we certainly know that it will be the middle class, upper class and the businesses footing the bill."

The funding plans offered by both Warren and Sanders would reduce over time a business's contribution to health care expenses.

That's not to say I endorse those plans, merely offering it response to your blanket statement about what "Liberals" want to do.

I am pretty sure reducing "the cost of doing business in the USA" or promoting more US jobs are no where in their rationale, but point taken that it may help IF it reduces the cost of healthcare.
