Democrats Blocking Immigration Bill

CNN The depressing predictability of the immigration debate. Apparently the DEMs will block the GOP Moderate's bill over border security funding... It is very odd that DEMs are against government spending in this case... I mean they have no problem spending hundreds of billions each year on social programs, however they won't make a one time payment to protect the Dreamers and to put the immigration topic behind us.

"What's more: Even if, by hook or by crook, the House manages to pass this compromise bill, it's virtually certain to be dead on arrival in the Senate. Even if all 50 Republican senators voted for it -- John McCain remains in Arizona battling brain cancer -- the bill would need 10 votes from Democrats to bring it to the floor for debate. And unless you have been living on another planet for the last few years, you know that 10 Democrats ain't voting for legislation that provides $25 billion in funding for a southern border wall."

It is interesting how the DEMs seemed to have no more desire to solve this immigration issue than the GOP folks. Maybe they are the ones wanting to use the Dreamers in the election.

Since they are reluctant to compromise now, I am thinking this is more about DEM politics than helping people. Over there I posted the following comment and questions:

"Ultimately this comes down to what is the purpose of the American Immigration policy? 

1. To help 1+ million people a year enter the "American Lifeboat".
2. To help America succeed by bringing in people who can help our country thrive. 

Or just assuming 1 million per year...What mix of the above? 

I think 200,000 "Life Boaters" and 800,00 "Make America Greaters" sounds much wiser than our current mix. 

That way we can afford to keep helping people in their home countries.

We apparently let ~1.6 million people immigrate her in 2016, and we are near a record rate...  So:  

• How many immigrants per year is the correct amount?
• What should be the characteristics of people we allow in?

The topic that makes strange bed fellows is back in the news.  Meaning, the Liberals that want to save the law breakers and the Conservatives that want cheap labor.  As compared to the Liberals that want higher wages and the Conservatives that want Law and Order.

At least it looks like they can still check immigration status when a law has been broken, thank heavens !!!  Thoughts?

Sorry for that very short post... I left home Tuesday at 4 AM, travelled to Beijing, travelled to Tianjin met with customers and travelled back to Beijing last night.  I am always amazed how I can be "awake" and moving for days, and yet seem to be in some lower state of consciousness... Well last night I hit the bed and was out for 12+ hours.  Now I feel a bit better.


Due to customer conflicts I am trapped in Beijing this weekend, however I have finally scheduled time tomorrow to see the Great Wall.  The concierge assured me that this is the best tour since President Obama went there. :-)


Now back to the topic of the post.

The VOX piece covers the topic pretty well, and I think these will be the DEM sticking points.

"It mentions “same treatment of illegal aliens, regardless of country of origin” — an allusion to changing the law that prevents Border Patrol agents from summarily deporting unaccompanied children from countries other than Mexico. And it refers to changing “the ‘catch and release’ policy through which immigrants are released while awaiting a hearing” — which would make it harder for asylum seekers to get a lawyer while their cases are pending.

Democrats have rejected past attempts at these changes as cruel: a crackdown on people fleeing gang violence that doesn’t make anyone safer. It’s not clear how many of them will accept these changes now as the cost of citizenship for DREAMers.

Preventing people from sponsoring parents, adult children, or siblings for US citizenship. The White House, led by Trump, has demanded limits on family-based immigration — which accounts for the majority of legal immigration to the US — as part of a DACA deal. The Trump framework would limit family sponsorship to “spouses and minor children” — thus presumably changing the F3 and F4 visas, used for US citizens to bring adult children and siblings, respectively, to the US, as well as an unlimited visa for citizens to sponsor their parents. (Reports indicate that people currently in line for those visas — a backlog that extends for years — will be able to remain in line.)"

I heard a Liberal woman on CNN who was adamant that the USA should keep all illegal workers and accept all people who show up at our borders because "they are just trying to improve their lives"!!!  Which of course is one of the silliest rationales I have heard since after travelling the world for decades I have never met anyone who is intentionally trying to ruin their life!!!  I have however met:

• People who have beliefs and behaviors who make their life worse.
• People who work to improve their lives in their home country.

So do you think the Far Left and Far Right can swallow their pride long enough to pass something that is as common sense as this proposal?  Or are they going to stay entrenched in their near religious zealotry?

Racist, Bigoted or Logical

When some one looks for a business partner, employee or son-in-law, does one start looking in places where fewer educated and culturally similar people live? As usual, I think Trump could phrase his comments much more tactfully, however he may have a point. We as Americans really need to determine what we want our immigration policy to accomplish.

By the way, the following comment didn't make it by the Minnpost moderators when I tried to post on 2 different articles. MP Drop in Refugees and MP Dreamers for a Wall I will never understand their guidelines...

I agree that the USA needed a lot of the world's needy and down trodden to move here back when we had an excess of land, factories, etc.  Therefore we had a very open immigration policy to encourage laborers to come here.  Now that we have a large population of citizens who are struggling to succeed, shouldn't we adjust our immigration policies accordingly?

Instead of inviting the world's down trodden here, how can we help them improve their home countries?

Time for my usual venting about MinnPost Moderation.  RB and BW replied to a comment of mine and I am simply not being allowed to post the following seemingly simple response.  You will have to go there to see BW's comment, however it was similar to RB's.

"For example, just think of the controversial things that have been said about rural voters when it comes to the Illegal Immigration, LGBT Rights, Mining / Farming Regulations, Abortion Rights, etc. Just to name a few." 

Why is it controversial to disagree on social issues? Should we just keep quiet about anti-Muslim fora on communities? Is it wrong to call out those who oppose illegal immigration while relying on that immigration for a cheap workforce. 

In any event, I thought voters chose Republicans because of economics and that the demagoguery on social issues was not all that important. This is the line that is used to try to convince suburban and even urban voters to go Republican--it's not about the gay bashing or the Muslim hating, it's about free markets! On the other hand, we've heard that the rural parts of the state abandoned the DFL because issues like LGBT rights and abortion have been "forced down their throats." Which is it going to be?" RB 

"To disagree regarding issues is fine, however just think how often Liberals here have referred to people that they disagree with as bigots, xenophobes, misogynists, racists, ignorant, hypocrites, polluters, irredeemable deplorables, etc. Now she made the claim that the educated urban Liberals she knows do not do put down the folks in the Conservative tribe, unfortunately it seems that many do though. 

And yes Conservatives do vote for more personal responsibility, lower taxes, less government mandated wealth transfer, more religious freedom, etc. However they also vote against people and candidates who insult and threaten then. They are just normal people after all." G2A

Apparently the these far left folks who block moderate commenters are still in business. MPP Immigration  Of course which leads to almost no comments... And simultaneously this discussion occurred on MinnPost Cruz .

Same old questions? The USA brings in ~1,000,000 legal immigrants each year. Many of whom are impoverished with a limited education. There are maybe 4,000,000,000 people in the world that would likely love to live in the USA. 

How many do you want to let immigrate each year? 

How many people do you want to have living in the USA?

Do you want 1.2 Billion like China/India? 

I don't hear the GOP talking about cutting back on legal immigration... Am I missing something here?" G2A

Back to MPP post, personally I think it is the Liberals who want it both ways. They apparently want to open our borders to whoever is willing to risk their life to get here, thus encouraging more people to risk their lives to get here. And they want to force businesses to pay more wages, more benefits, etc. And they want tax payers to provide even more government programs and assistance.

I am busy with the most vexing of seasonal problems, the annual fight to make all of my Christmas light strings actually light.  The most problematic is that beautiful "pre-wired" Christmas tree.  After years of struggling, I am finally removing the strings and starting over.  Which in itself is a challenge because the Chinese folks that put them on were very thorough.

Facebook and Tribes

One of my Conservative Tribe FB Friends started to post things that made fun of the people in the immigrant caravan. Of course, me being me I have to question people who post very "Tribal" beliefs on FaceBook.  I do this to both Tribe Liberal and Tribe Conservative members.  Some of the past occurrences:

• Liberal who I know had some highly questionable events occurring in High School questioning regarding Kavanaugh. She took it with a grain of salt and asked that we "not go there"... :-)
• Conservative who I know posted regarding gun control, liberal conspiracies, etc. He and his friends have been patient with my questions and disagreements.
• Liberal who was a big supporter of Black Lives Matter and angry at police in general. She did not accept my questions and comments very well...  She then unfriended me.
• Conservative person I barely knew that posted so many pointless and somewhat hateful things that I finally unfriended him.
• Liberals who post regarding climate change, school systems, welfare, taxes, LGBT rights, religious rights, etc. They sometimes get frustrated with me, but usually they are good sports.

With this in mind, I was a little surprised recently to be unfriended by the older guy over the immigration topic. Here is some background:

• He posted this image of the caravan that says they should be marching on their government, not marching to the USA for free stuff.
• I commented that they would likely be killed or imprisoned, and that we in the USA are very lucky to be able to march our government.
• He and another of course got defensive, asked me why I was commenting there and changed the subject to how their ancestors had done it very differently.  Somehow "more legally" apparently.
• They shared stories of poor people risking their lives and sometimes dying on the ship to get here.  And how there was no welfare and freebies back then.
• At which time I felt compelled to remind them that many folks got really really cheap land when they came here... Many of our families still own that 160 acres and it is worth ~$600,000 now...
• Things went okay up to that point and we let the topic drop. Then the original poster who is usually a very nice guy took a parting shot at me. He posted a meme about people who support immigration should provide their names and addresses so they will have a place to live, and tagged it to me...
• Well my competitive nature took issue with that, so I asked how are these poor families who are different from our ancestors? Why should they not be allowed to come to the border and have their claims heard? If we should open fire on them or something? Should Americans ~150 years ago have shot at the ships carrying our great grand parents?
• Finally I did the judgmental moralistic thing... :-( I wrote that I was did not understand how good Christian country folk could dehumanize these potential refugees that they see them as a "problem / threat" instead of as people.
• And please remember that I am against sanctuary cities, harboring illegal workers, etc.  However I do believe these are people that deserve a chance to be heard. Not "problems". 

I'll finish this later... Now I am going to the Anoka Halloween parade. :-)  Well, that was fun.  :-)

To end the story... Of course he gave no answer as to why these folks should be treat less humanely than his grand parents...  He just unfriended me instead.  The good news is I will not be exposed to his tribal memes anymore. The bad news is that he will not have any feedback loop questioning the tribe's hateful dehumanizing rhetoric. :-(

We Need More Unskilled Immigrants?

It absolutely fascinates me when people:

• on one hand complain that wages are too low and that we need the government to mandate higher wages and more welfare benefits...
• and on the other hand saying that we should allow more unskilled immigrants into the country?

Here is a creative idea...

1. Keep limiting the immigration of unskilled workers
2. Cut the welfare benefits
3. Have people take the jobs that will now pay "a living wage"
4. Even if they are unpleasant demeaning hard jobs...

How did American low skilled low educated workers become so fussy?

And why did our society encourage it?

Reverse Discrimination is Okay?

FB is hopping lately, we were discussing the Boy / Native American incident and Phillip's perceptions and judgments. And my friend made an interesting comment.

John, again you are lost in the weeds. The MAGA hat has become a big FU to those who embrace diversity and threaten the power of the majority race. It is the old white person’s Little Big Horn. It will last longer, but the outcome will be similar.

To which I responded.

So somehow being:

• against ILLEGAL immigration
• against harboring ILLEGAL workers
• for protecting the jobs and wages of legal low knowledge and low skill workers from unnecessary competition from ILLEGAL workers

has become being against "diversity"?  

I will never understand how tribe liberals think... Please remember that I work with dozens of immigrants from all over the world and they are great !!! However they followed the legal process and did not cut in line. 

Are you ready to take a shot at answering some of my questions yet regarding what an ideal immigration system looks like to you?

Given the mixture of opinions regarding this topic within the Conservative base alone, I am happy that I am not Romney.  As stated in the last post, this is a topic where the Rights and Lefts seem to mix often.

I was wondering though if Hiram was talking about "immigrants"  or "illegal immigrants".  Being a Law and Order type of guy, it still frustrates me when people want to reward people who budged in line by jumping the border or over staying their legal welcome.  Kind of like those folks that merge at the last possible minute...

I feel for the legal immigrants who waited and paid their dues to be met by lower income jobs because the budgers are helping to keep the pay low for those entry level jobs.  We seem to forget that consequence.

Let's say there are ~5 Billion people in the world that would love to move to the USA. How many of them do you want to invite and how fast? Do you want them to stand in line, get back ground checks, etc or do you just want them to run across the border? 

I would prefer orderly controlled immigration. If nothing else, to treat those who are following the process with respect. (ie no line budging allowed...) And if we really want to increase starting wages, it may be a good idea to reduce the number of people who can do those jobs to the legal citizens for now.

The point of my last question is that usually Liberals who are in support of a "Path to Citizenship" and weaker borders  are against NAFTA.  And it just occurred to me that this is very ironic since they are concerned about the jobs going to these other low cost countries, but they are okay with having the low cost labor come here.  Thoughts?

 My thoughts in response to the call for more funding to help the children amassed on our border.

Here is the conversation that MP just would not let me join.  And I fund it so fascinating...

I don't know about that. Hatred is hatred, and white Americans seemed to develop hatred towards the Indians pretty quickly. Slavery also seems like a pretty good example of hatred--that was popular with the white folks pretty quickly.

Good News and Liberal Hypocrisy

First the news topic, MSN Federal Judge Orders Family Reunification The judge also set time limits which is good.

The second speaks to the Liberal elites hypocrisy:

"Sessions spoke Tuesday to a crowd at the conservative-leaning conservative Criminal Justice Legal Foundation, and accused critics of his “zero tolerance” immigration policy of hypocrisy.

“These same people live in gated communities, many of them, and are featured at events where you have to have an ID to even come in to hear em speak. They like a little security around themselves,” he said.

“If you try to scale the fence they’d be even too happy to have you arrested and separated from your children.”

The last line brought laughs and a few cheers from the audience in Los Angeles, which was greeted with protests by those who see the separation of children from their undocumented parents as inhumane."  MSN Session Jokes about Child Separation

Along those lines, here is an interesting study I heard about one day on NPR.  WAPO Researchers put two Spanish-speakers on a train and changed commuters’ views of immigration


It pretty much aligns with what I have experienced in the behaviors of suburban and rural Liberals.  They are very supportive of the poor, the immigrants, the minorities, etc until they start to move into their neighborhoods or schools.  I mean SO MANY middle and upper class Liberal households have moved to get their kids into that Whiter more affluent district.

CNBC rump suspends entry of immigrants who cannot pay for healthcare

This is so ironic given that Republicans do not want to mandate that citizens meet the basic requirement.

"Some immigrants, mostly family members of US citizens or green card holders, can apply for lawful permanent residency abroad and obtain a green card almost immediately. Otherwise, immigrants can come to the US on two types of visas: those for immigrants who intend to settle in the US permanently and eventually obtain a green card, and those that only allow an immigrant to remain in the US temporarily.

In order to get a green card, an immigrant will have to prove to a consular officer that they will obtain health insurance within 30 days of their arrival in the US. If they can’t, they must demonstrate that they will be able to pay for their medical expenses.

The proclamation does not lay out clear procedures for determining whether immigrants meet the proclamation’s requirements — it will be up to individual consular officers charged with evaluating visa applications and the State Department, which is expected to issue internal guidance on it. 

But based on insurance coverage alone, the majority of adults who were granted green cards over the last three years would have been shut out."

So if this is an acceptable position for immigrants...  Why is the GOP against this for US Citizens?
