"President Donald Trump, too, has called for "more money than they're talking about" in stimulus checks, and has continued to push for a second check in the final bill. White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany did not say whether Trump would refuse to sign a stimulus package that didn't include a second check, but said Tuesday that Trump "would really like to see those stimulus checks in there."
Maybe the GOP folks are friggin socialists?

Republicans are engaged in a delicate balancing act. They want to do enough so that they don't get blamed but not enough that would result in Democrats getting credit. They want to prevent things from getting done, so that they can complain that Democrats don't do anything.

I don't know... They seem to have been gung ho to hand out checks to working people for quite awhile...
Maybe the see it as a tax cut?
One of the frustrating things about Republicans is that they don't put anything on the table. They cross over the line between being tough negotiators to being impossile negotiators. This used to irritate me with health care policy. They voted 60 times or so to repeal Obamacare, but they never presented an alternative. This was because they couldn't agree on an alternative, nor could they agree to deliver a deal.
Trump campaigned on the idea that he could make government work. "I alone can do it." What I took that to mean was that he could enter in negotiations with Democrats and once deals were made, he could deliver on them. But that isn't something he could ever do.

Yes, Trump definitely failed as the "Deal Maker".
And now we see the problem. After great difficulty, and a lot of suffering, Republican legislators were finally brought to an agreement, and now Trump threatens to undermine it. It wasn't easy for Democrats to agree to this bill. There have been lots of hypocrisy accusation, lots of old quotes dragged up. And then last night Trump demands payments his own party fought fiercely against, stabbing his own congressional party in the back.
