Is Laura Ingraham Speaking for Many?

When I watch the FOX News channel while visiting Mom and Dad I find it almost surreal what Ingraham, Hannity and the other Opinion folks say. There is pretty much no real news, just a lot of propaganda spewing that apparently folks from Tribe Conservative are happy to hear because it aligns with their beliefs.

I want to give her the benefit of the doubt that she is not a big time racist, however it is real hard given the vitriol she spewed...  I mean when she has to clarify her message and tell the Klan folks that she does not support their views...  She certainly said something stupid.  Now the question is ...

Did she learn something that she will do differently next time?

There is always a longing for the past, especially among old people like Laura.

The challenge is... I think they have a very nostalgic and false view of the past.

I mean we do have a record number of immigrants in the country, and it does create stress...

But this has occurred with every immigrant wave in our history.

John said...

Of course I do agree with her that Liberals seem to want to bring ever more of the world’s poor, unskilled and uneducated into our country with no thought to the consequences for our own unsuccessful folks.

Old people do view the past fondly. This is something I, for one, share with Laura, as we both enter our sunset years. There are lots of movies that do that. Birth of a Nation, the original, for one. I just watched the first two Godfather movies both of which are drenched with a nostalgia for the past. And of course, particularly the second movie, has sympathy for the poor, unskilled and uneducated as one of it's major themes. Indeed, it's one of America's major themes. Believe, few of the millions of immigrants who came to this country were among the elites back home.

Probably not, but back at the historical high points we had empty land and needed people to develop it.

Now we have no empty land and ever fewer good jobs for people with low level qualifications. And worse yet now we tax American citizens at high levels to care for the unsuccessful...

So being at record high levels is totally different" from the past in many ways.

I think we need people.

I have a friend who came from Poland. When I asked what he found most different about Poland and America, one of the things he mentioned was the vast empty spaces. We are a virtually unpopulated country. Out west, there are state where no one lives, at least when Congress is in session.

When one watches the Ingraham or Carlson shows lately, I guess I'm not sure why they still merit the benefit of the doubt?

John said...

Hiram,
Are you recommending we reinstitute the land grant program?

You can move here if you agree to build a home and live in a rural area for 5 years?

Those federal parks are pretty big... I think it would be interesting to see how many takers there would be?

John said...

Sean,
I don’t watch those 2 ever... Usually it is the Five or Gutfield.

And Ingraham certainly condemned David Duke and his like in her clarification.

Let's see...
CNN calls somebody a racist because they complain about illegal immigration. Can we say Fake News?

John said...

Actually she complained about demographic changes and how “bad” they are.

Be they due to legal and or illegal immigration. And David Duke thanked her for supporting his agenda...

I am saying our country is virtually empty. Many states with two senators and a disproportionate impact on presidential elections, have few people actually living in them. They are the American 21st century version of what used to be known in England as "rotten boroughs".

--Hiram

John said...

I am guessing that is why many perceive folks like yourself as "elite /snobbish", and likely why they do not vote for Democrats.

Now above you wrote on a post about immigration...

"I think we need people.

John said...

So it sounded like you wanted more people to fill those wide open spaces...

Or do you just want an excuse to allow more people to crowd into our already crowded cities?

Anonymous said...

Actually, she complained about demographic changes, and that would be due to illegal immigration- the first logical leap CNN makes. Then they make a second, larger and more objectionable leap to label that concern as racist. But then, this is CNN.

Anonymous said...

Actually, she complained about demographic changes, and that would be due to illegal immigration-

Demographic changes is such a vague concept. For myself, I have always been aware of the demographic change in our population, basically the aging of the baby boomer generation. It's affect on all of us is huge, but it didn't seem to be what Laura was talking about.

--Hiram

John said...

Actually she said... "Now, much of this is related to both illegal, and in some cases legal immigration that, of course, progressives love."

Sean said...

"And Ingraham certainly condemned David Duke and his like in her clarification."

This ain't my first rodeo, nor is it hers. She's got a long history of stepping right up to the line, then feigning outrage when she gets called on it.

John said...

Ah... But isn't that what entertainers in that line of work do?

Sean said...

"But isn't that what entertainers in that line of work do?"

Racism for fun and profit?

John said...

What do you see as racist in this?

“In some parts of the country, it does seem like the America that we know and love doesn’t exist anymore, massive demographic changes have been foisted upon the American people, and they’re changes that none of us ever voted for and most of us don’t like. From Virginia to California, we see stark examples of how radically in some ways the country has changed. Now, much of this is related to both illegal and in some cases, legal immigration that, of course, progressives love.”

Ms. Ingraham then cited several stories where illegal immigrants committed heinous crimes after slipping through the cracks of the immigration system. She called on President Trump to enforce existing immigration laws, strengthen border security and build the wall.

“This is a national emergency and he must demand that Congress act now,” she said. “There is something slipping away in this country and it’s not about race or ethnicity. It’s what was once a common understanding by both parties that American citizenship is a privilege, and one that at a minimum requires respect for the rule of law and loyalty to our Constitution.

Ms. Ingraham’s comments about changing demographics sparked a firestorm on Twitter, with many users calling on Fox News advertisers to pull out of her show.

John said...

Please remember the context of the comments.

She was replying to Ocasio-Cortez's silly "not America" comments.

John said...

Now are you going to attack her with as much vigor as you do the GOP liars?

She may even give Trump a run for his money for being stupid or lying...

John said...

And OC is a bit crazy, no wonder Laura went a bit bonkers...

OC On Abolish ICE

Sean said...

"What do you see as racist in this?"

The primary "demographic" difference between this wave of immigrants versus previous waves of immigrants is skin color. Since no other demographic factor was discussed, it's plain as the nose on one's face to figure out what she was talking about. Sure, there's some other stuff in there that isn't racist, but that doesn't take away from the stuff that is.

"Now are you going to attack her with as much vigor as you do the GOP liars?"

When she wields as much power as someone like President Trump or Paul Ryan or Mitch McConnell, sure.

"And OC is a bit crazy, no wonder Laura went a bit bonkers.."

Again, here's Appelen-World excusing the horrible behavior of a white person, like they have no personal responsibility for their actions.

John said...

I am always amazed how focused you are regarding the color of someone's skin...

Here are some facts...

"In 2016, 1.49 million foreign-born individuals moved to the United States, a 7 percent increase from the 1.38 million coming in 2015.
- India was the leading country of origin, with 175,100 arriving in 2016,
- followed by 160,200 from China/Hong Kong,
- 150,400 from Mexico,
- 54,700 from Cuba,
- and 46,600 from the Philippines.

India and China surpassed Mexico in 2013 as the top origin countries for recent arrivals. Among the top countries of recent immigrants, many more Cuban born arrived in 2016 (54,700) compared to 2015 (31,500)—an increase of 74 percent. In contrast, Canadian arrivals dropped 19 percent: 38,400 in 2016, versus 47,300 in 2015."

And some refugee information

John said...

My point being that I think people are more frustrated with the non-Christian and/or illegal entries than anyone's skin color.

People simply do not like it when a different group comes into their community and "cuts down their Christmas tree"... Either symbolically or literally.

John said...

Apparently this is not a new situation.

Quite simply: People are resistant to change...

Sean said...

You're acting like this is the only thing Laura Ingraham has ever said. It's not.

John said...

There seems to be no doubt that she is:
- anti-Muslim
- anti-border jumper
- anti-illegal resident

Not sure what else one could get out of those snippets.

Racism defined

1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

2 a : a doctrine or political program based on the assumption of racism and designed to execute its principles

b : a political or social system founded on racism

3 : racial prejudice or discrimination

Sean said...

If you can't see how those statements fit your definition, I don't know what to tell you.

John said...

Now you may be excited to think that all the people of a race are the same...

I prefer to see them as very different people with similar ethnic heritages...

Race:
a : a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock

b : a class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics

John said...

Being against people who have different beliefs, behaviors, ideas regarding law /order is not racism...

As my daughters always told me.... There are ghetto people and normal people, and it has nothing to do with their race or skin color...

It has to do with their beliefs, choices, behaviors, etc.

Sean said...

Her comments don't look at people as individuals -- they paint with an indiscriminate broad brush. You can play word games all you want, but those of us in the real world know exactly what she's talking about. It's fascinating how you can manufacture all sorts of malicious intent in what someone like Ocasio-Cortez says, but this crap flies right past you with out notice.

John said...

I call Trump on his lies.

I call OC on hers.

No problem.

Sean said...

Listen, if you don't think Latinos notice the disproportionate amount of negative attention Ocasio-Cortez gets, just like African-Americans notice the same for Maxine Waters, you're kidding yourself. There's a reason they're getting singled out, and it ain't just occasional lack of policy depth. Paul Ryan is still hailed as a budget wonk despite years of producing budgets that had trillion-dollar magic asterisks.

John said...

Sean,
Please note that it is the Liberal Fact Checkers who are calling OC out on her lies / errors. I don't care what her race is... She is young naïve and not ready for prime time.

Therefore she says foolish things and gets caught.

John said...

As for Maxine Waters, she made her own bed...

Sean said...

The RNC -- the national party -- released a statement attacking Ocasio-Cortez today, accusing her of wanting to turn the U.S. into Venezuela. Don't tell me that conservatives aren't trying to make her a symbol.

Sean said...

As a comparison, can you think of a case where Democrats have similarly nationalized a Republican legislator?

John said...

I assume your talking about this one.

What about DNC's attacks against that crazy guy Roy Moore.

Sean said...

The Democrats haven't nationalized Roy Moore, tying him to every race in the country. Meanwhile, Tim Pawlenty sent out a mailer with Ocasio-Cortez's picture on it.
