I think polls like this reflect more of a dissatisfaction with the way our version of capitalism is working today than anything else.

I don't know... With so many Liberals heaping unqualified praise on Democratic Socialist friendly countries like Norway, Sweden, Denmark, etc... I think many young people see some nirvana...

All the while not looking at the differences, complexities, etc...

There's a difference between Norway and the picture Republicans are trying to paint when they say "socialism". (of course, the proposals by our so-called American liberal socialists wouldn't even get us to Norway-level socialism...)

Capitalism? Socialism? For Democrats, It’s Really Bernie vs Donald.

Laurie said...

Their survey needed a third category - mixed economy- and also a question about should the USA increase or decrease the amount of social spending from what it is currently.

John said...

This is all about a mixed economy, as we have discussed many times...

Neither a pure Socialistic nor pure capitalistic country exists... It is just how far people want to pull the boat to the left or right...

John said...

Laurie,
Do you really think the GOP is out to eliminate all social programs?

All disability and old folks care?

Laurie said...

about - "Do you really think the GOP is out to eliminate all social programs?"

Have I ever said anything even remotely like that?

John said...

Laurie,
You seemed to indicate that this was about someone not wanting a mixed economy...

Sean,
A nice thing a about Norway that many Liberals forget is that they are very fussy about who they let live there.

The following is from a millennial FB friend who has been raised by Liberals and my responses... It was in response to the Romney piece.

"It’s reassuring to know there are still good people in the Republican Party. If only pieces like this could be the norm and not an outlier." Nick

"Personally, I think the vast majority of Republicans are like this. The big difference between Conservatives and Liberals is how they envision enabling and pushing immature and under educated people to change away from the failed core beliefs that their parent(s) and community have ingrained in them." G2A

"Yes because today’s Republican Party is all about raising up the bottom 95% of the population. And of course you can see them standing on the right side of morality when so many of them blindly support Trump and all he says in order to get re-elected." Nick

"How would you recommend raising up the bottom 95% of the population in a sustainable manner? Higher taxes on the few, more handouts for the unsuccessful... Continuing to make it easy for American consumers to buy low American content products. Continuing to flood low wage job market with low skill low knowledge workers from over seas? How do you think it will help the unsuccessful to begin to value education, abstinence, marriage, work, saving, investing? The challenge is very difficult, my advice is to question anything you hear or read from either tribe...

I do agree that it is a shame that many GOP folk are hesitant to call Trump out on his lies. Here is a discussion where we discussed some of their rationalizing." G2A

I only post this because I understand how a bunch of people think it is easy to "solve the country's ills" when they are raised in a certain way.

And of course I got no answer to my questions...

From the Romney post...

Maybe you should research their current charity work...

I bolded why many liberals would be anti-Mormon charity. :-)

"Mormon charities follow four basic steps in their operations:

1. Receive funds from people around the world. Donors include Church members as well as other generous people who support Mormon humanitarian aid efforts.

2. Identify needs and develop projects to serve and meet those needs.

3. Find local organizations to partner with and help them successfully complete projects.

4. Engage volunteers to support these partners and projects, and provide a coordinated response to area needs.

Mormon humanitarian efforts are based on four principles: self-reliance, personal responsibility, community support, and sustainability."

John said...

With all of the above in mind... What do you think young idealistic Liberals want?

Does Ocasio-Cortez speak for them?

Laurie said...

I think nearly everyone wants a mixed economy, the differences are in the amount of social spending, which is why I included the question should social spending increases or decrease (and in what areas) ?

John said...

The next question you have to ask though is where should it come from?

and

What "return" will be gained for the money spent?

Or are you just thinking about spending more and more indefinitely???

Dems are always nervous. It's hard to forget that in 2016, we won the popular vote by 3 million, yet somehow lost the election.

Hiram,
According to the rules of the USA election system... The Democratic candidate LOST. :-)

Apparently she should have spent more time talking to the Irredeemable Deplorables... :-)

Laurie said...

Taxes should be raised on the rich- partly to reduce the deficit and partly to increase access to health care. I'd also do more spending at the federal level for housing for the the homeless. States and cities should spend more on the homeless as well.

The Democratic candidate LOST. :-)

But according the rules of arithmetic, she won. It is important to remember that Donald Trump was not the choice of the American people and he should not be allowed to act contrary to their will.

Republicans argued with some eloquence that Barack Obama, a president whose election was undisputed, should not be allowed to perform certain functions of his office during the final years of his president. That view has changed with respect to Trump, a man whose election was disputed even by himself.

Hiram,
Please feel free to keep complaining that someone won the game by following the rules...

You sound a lot like the whiny GOP folk who disliked Obama.

John said...

More food for thought

I like to remind people that what happens in our country to be thought of as a game. This lack of seriousness about what's at stake resulted in the election of a president who is basically a clown.

I do agree that he does some funny things...

However he does seem to be driving change for better or worse...

Which of course is part of why people elected him over a "mini Obama"...

Now if you want to be all serious about this game we call life... Our society has laws, processes and regulations that determine how votes are cast, counted and summed to determine a winner... So are you recommending that we break our own laws because you dislike the winning candidate?

I never though of you as an anarchist. :-)
