As a change from the serious, here is someone who really dislikes self checkout kiosks. Of course since I am a do it yourselfer, usually I like self service.
VOX Wouldn’t it be better if self-checkout just died? Yes! Because you won’t like what it spawns next.

Why do you like putting Americans out of jobs, John?

It must be that sense of self reliance and a need for a hobby...
Currently I have my Parent's 1996 Jet Ski in my garage. The engine is hanging from a winch and I am replacing the impeller, starter, bendix, seat cover and more.
I could have hired the work done however this is more fun and educational.
Also, currently I am spending ~$25,000 per year on my middle daughter's college expenses. And next year I will have 2 in school again. And Lord knows the FAFSA I fill out each year is pointless.
So maybe I am doing things to save money because I like to and because my taxes are high to pay for the healthcare, food, housing and education of others who do not have my knowledge or drive....
Good question.
Giving that question some further thought... Some things that I do to support local workers are:
- Shop my local brick and mortar stores first. Use online shopping for unique harder to get things.
- Eat out pretty much everyday for lunch.
But waiting in line for someone to scan my 5 items does seem somewhat pointless... Just like it would be having someone fill my gas tank as I sat watching.
I wonder if the author thinks we should legislate full service gas stations, full service grocery stores, get rid of those ATMs, etc to fight the continuing automation and self serve wave?
Let's make sure that people who don't want to work for an education or a specialty skill some work to do???
On the other hand we have a severe shortage of workers to do the jobs that "illegals" do. But those must be too hard, dirty or distasteful for our unemployed low academics / low skill citizens...
Star Tribune For dropouts and other workers on the edge, employers have jobs and are adapting to find them
Employers are seeking ways to expand hiring pool amid surging economy.
I don't think the author is suggesting that. As someone who used to work in the grocery industry, I understand the relentless pressure to drive out costs. But I'm surprised that stores who work so hard to perfect the in-store experience for customers then push their customers to self-checkouts which are technologically imperfect and often not adequately staffed with people to help with problems. Some costs are better than others -- and the interaction with a friendly, helpful cashier can make the end of the grocery store run a better experience for the customer.
I am guessing that is why they still offer both...
Self Checkout for people like me who have no real desire to have a bonding experience with the Checkout person.
And staffed checkout aisles for others who appreciate the human touch.
For all this talk of "technologically imperfect" and short staffed, I guess at Home Depot, Cub, Target, Lowes, etc I have not run into that problem. And I love the Mann Plymouth Grand's buy online and pick up at the kiosk.
